"information wants to be free"

I noticed you used this phrase in your recent posting at Templates for Deletion on the Limited Use template - I can't offer any advice with copyright issues, but I would like to know if you happen to know the origin of that phrase, I've been trying to track down its source recently. Thanks, stillnotelf has a talk page 04:20, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd been looking for "information yearns to be free" and found hints that it might be attributable to John Markoff, but I couldn't find anything consistent enough to be confident. Thanks for your help, stillnotelf has a talk page 17:35, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maori carving

Hi James. Is there some reason you uploaded Image:Waitangi Maori Carving n.jpg, which is a smaller version of Image:Waitangi Maori Carving.jpg? (It looks like you also increased the contrast a bit.) Anyway, we generally want images to be as large as possible, since the software can automatically produce thumbnails. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 04:47, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Hawera Water Tower n.jpg listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded, Image:Hawera Water Tower n.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.
The same goes for Image:Kerikeri Rainbow Falls n.jpg, which is a thumbnail of Image:Kerikeri Rainbow Falls.jpg. dbenbenn | talk 17:53, 14 February 2006 (UTC
And Image:Sulfureous Fumaroles n.jpg is a slightly brightened thumbnail of Image:Sulpherous Fumeroles.jpg. dbenbenn | talk 20:08, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I may be so bold as to answer on behalf of JShook, who doesn't seem to be around on Wikipedia much any more: JShook uploaded a large number of very high quality images for use in articles, but then had second thoughts about giving others the right to use the photos and the likely reduction in the potential for him to sell his photos. He uploaded reduced versions of the photos with a suffix of " n" - still high enough resolution to be useful in Wikipedia - and requested the originals be deleted. The deletions were accepted by IFD. It would appear that these are cases where the original photos, due to oversight, were not submitted to IFD. I don't think it is my place to submit the original photos to IFD, but the " n" substitutes should not be deleted.-gadfium 21:57, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see that three of the above images were marked with IFD by JShook, but perhaps they were not placed on the IFD page. I'm reverting to the IFD version, have fixed the article references, and will complete the IFD process. The final image, Image:Sulpherous Fumeroles.jpg, does appear to have missed IFD entirely due to an oversight. It has a different spelling to the replacement, which might account for the situation. I'll leave this one alone.-gadfium 22:14, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back

I thought you might have left us for good. I'm looking forward to seeing your South Island photos.-gadfium 22:28, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For your photographic contributions

A Barnstar!
The Photographer's Barnstar

I present JShook with the Photographer's Barnstar for his great photographic contributions to the Wikipedia, particularly those relating to New Zealand. Blarneytherinosaur 09:47, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your photo of Knight's Point, and came to thank you for adding it to the article, but having taken a moment to peruse your photos of both the North and South Island, I think a photography barnstar is in order. Blarneytherinosaur 09:47, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
