Taskmastering
I'd like to start sketching out the Education Program Working Group task work related to enlisting support from Wikiprojects, and I'm glad we'll be collaborating on that. Would you be happy to do this on wiki, perhaps in one of our user spaces? Are you aware of any others who want to help us? --Jgmikulay (talk) 14:40, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Jenny, good to hear from you. I'm going to set up a draft page in my userspace and start collating data on projects. Maybe a table or such. You comfortable working with wiki tables? They look a bit gnarly in the edit window, but they're useful and if you look at my edits you can see how I add to the fields. I'll link it for you when i've got it up. What do you think are good metrics for measuring how active/influential a project is? I was thinking -
- number of posts to project talk pages in last 6 mo.
- number of active members (this only works for projects with a sign-up list/category listing)
- ?
- As for other members interested, I don't remember anyone else mentioning interest during the speed-session in DC. We're such sharp tacks that we could probably get this done on our own. Some of the other task forces seem much more onerous. The Interior (Talk) 17:02, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Primer on wiki tables: H:TABLE The Interior (Talk) 17:06, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
I'm comfortable with tables, and I like the process you propose. For indicators of activity/influence, I was also thinking about:
- projects to which past EP classes or students have contributed
- projects that correspond directly to academic disciplines and specializations from which EP draws participation
I'm also curious about whether the community has done any analysis of projects in the past--are you aware of any inquiry or results upon which we could build? --Jgmikulay (talk) 17:58, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm looking into past analyses, there appears to be a Council that oversees the wpjs (my new shorthand), we should drop them a line. Here's a start to our task force page:
Look at you, making stuff happen! Thank you. I am watching this page and the new one for our task force, and I hope to be adding my own contributions soon. --Jgmikulay (talk) 20:30, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- Minor change to analysis table - rather than number of posts to talk page, we'll look at the number of "watchers". We can find this with one click - go to the project talk page, go to the "history" tab, and there will be a link to "Number of watchers". Give a good indication of how many people might check out a message posted there. The Interior (Talk) 21:03, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
re GAN Illecillewaet Glacier
Hi,
I've reviewed your nomination and left a few comments at Talk:Illecillewaet Glacier/GA1.
Awaiting your replies, the review is placed on hold.
Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 16:52, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the review Mathew. I'll address your comments over the weekend. Not looking forward to trying to figure out the image copyrights, though. Bleh. The Interior (Talk) 17:38, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry. I stopped reading the article, and just looked for your response here or on the GA1 page. When they're weren't any, I jumped to the conclusion that the changes hadn't been by the 26th as stated. My fault. Why don't you renominate it and let me know on my talk page? I can't undo the fail, but I can add a few more comments (mainly about the quotes and the recent data being 10 years old) and put it on hold until the Mary Vaux image is cleared. It don't think the request for the IPA is part of the GA criteria. Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 14:42, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
- Good stuff, Mathew. I'm going to wait a week or so to see if we can get Mary into the public domain. If you want to leave me any more specific notes, I can try to get them cleared up before re-nominating. The IPA thing is a pain, you really have to be a competent linguist to even set it up! Appreciate your understanding, best to you, The Interior (Talk) 15:31, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
- hey, I reverted the "fail" (can't see why I can't do this) and added a few comments to Talk:Illecillewaet Glacier/GA1. MathewTownsend (talk) 18:33, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Kelowna Climate Dfb
The National Atlas of Canada Koppen is small-scale and pertains to 1921-1950, before climate change. The actual figures for the last few decades tell a different story-
7.7(mean annual temp. In *c)x20+140=154+140=294 mm steppe cutoff. Kelowna receives 380.5 mm – it is a humid climate. Jan. mean temp -3.8= D climate Hottest month (July)= 19.1 = Dfb
I cannot find any set of figures that suggests Kelowna is BSk.24.108.61.172 (talk) 06:18, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've been searching the web for anything more recent, but haven't found anything reliable. Do you have a source for Dfb, or just the climate charts? This switches back and forth constantly - we need a good ref for Dfb if that's that current classification. Otherwise someone will just switch it back. The Interior (Talk) 06:22, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
If I link to the charts at Environment Canada, will that do?24.108.61.172 (talk) 07:01, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
- Well, that's sort of original research, and frowned upon. There must be some sort of reliable Koppen database. But I agree that the precip seems to be above the Bsk cutoff. The Interior (Talk)
These are two sources that determine the precipitation threshold and the koppen climate classification.
- Updated world map of the K¨oppen-Geiger climate classification
- World Map of the Köppen-Geiger climate classification updated
Based on these sources, the data taken at Kelowna Airport would qualify as a humid continental climate as 7.7(mean annual temp. In *c)x20+140=154+140=294 mm steppe cutoff. (as 30-70% of the precipitation occurs from April to September) Kelowna receives 380.5 mm – it is a humid climate. Jan. mean temp -3.8= D climate Hottest month (July)= 19.1 = Dfb (as precipitation is evenly spread throughout the year)Ssbbplayer (talk) 20:07, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

- Turkey was et, now the fridge is full of sandwiches courtesy Interior's mom. Spent it at a cosy cabin on Adams Lake with good family. Had some nice scotch and a sail in my cousin's sloop. How was yours? The Interior (Talk) 15:37, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Team Chocolate
- Hi The Interior, my name is Kyle and I'm leading a group to create and edit a new wikipedia article. We're looking forward to working together to create a professional wikipedia entry.
Our professor Wnewbold wanted to make sure we contacted you. My talk page can be found at User:Kjrichardso2. Kjrichardso2 (talk) 12:23, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hello The Interior, Kyle isn't in class today, so our group has gone over the topics that we thought were interesting, located in Kyle's Sandbox. The bolded lines are the ones we were discussing on doing articles over. We are very interested in The Dark Side of Chocolate and have found a lot of information on the topic. Do you think this would be a viable topic to do an article over? Sicphilosophy (talk) 19:11, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
The Mighty Ducks
- Hello! My name is Tierney Edon, and I am the pathfinder for our group, in charge of directing everybody in the creation of our article on Wikipedia. We are thankful that we have a mentor to help us through this process. We look forward to working with you! My talk page can be found at User:Tierneyedon.Tierneyedon (talk) 14:13, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! My group (The Mighty Ducks)came up with some potential topic ideas and listed them in user:tierneyedon/sandbox. The three we narrowed down to are in bold with sources listed underneath. Please let us know what you think would be the best topic to choose! Thanks!
- Hello, my name is Andy and I was wondering if you were a Vancouver Canucks or a hockey fan in general, because I am a huge hockey fan. Please answer me at User:Andywelk. —Preceding undated comment added 19:03, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm glad to hear that you're a hockey fan. I played wing at my high school at Green Bay Wisconsin. I almost played for the Orangeville Americans of the Greater Metro Hockey League based out of Ontario and Quebec. My favorite team is the Wild. . I was stoked because I thought they were finally going to make the playoffs this year, but the lockout is ruining my hopes. I do cheer for the Blackhawks in the playoffs though, since the Wild don't normally make it.User:Andywelk. —Preceding undated comment added 18:09, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hello! We decided to go with political messages of Dr.Seuss. We are starting to compile our article by researching different major books. If you could look at the research we have done so far and give us feedback, that would be great! They can be found in my sandbox user:tierneyedon/sandbox Thank you! —Preceding undated comment added 14:14, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hello Interior—this group especially needs guidance on where their contributions should go within the context of the existing articles and subsections covering Dr. Seuss. Thanks! -Webster Newbold (talk) 16:20, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Hello! Our group has been going back and forth trying to decide whether or not to have a separate page with our finding on the political messages or add to an existing page. Have any ideas?

Hello. Our group has a list of topics that we have come up with, but we think that we have found one that we would like to pursue. Before we proceed, we would like you to review the topic and sources first. You can access this information in my sandbox User:vtdavis/sandbox
Hello. The group has a draft of our article in my sandbox and we would appreciate it if you could give us any feedback. We have also discovered that there is more than one of this statue around. If you know anyone who is into art and sculptures, can you please send them our way. We are having a bit of trouble finding out more info about the locations of this statue. Information is in my sandbox. Thank you. User:vtdavis/sandbox —Preceding undated comment added 19:06, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

- Hi There. My name is Aubrey Coquillard and I (like those above me) am another pathfinder. Hopefully you can help us in the future with figuring out wikipedia and kicking butt with this project. Feel free to connect with me here Amcoquillard (talk) 19:13, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Hey The Interior! Our group has somewhat figured out what we'd like to research a bit. Hopefully it's a good topic. We think it'd be cool to research something that Ball State students really love and actually use everyday oddly enough. Here's what we have and some links: "Naked Lady" in Bracken Library. (Forest Idyll) (no article existing) sources:
- Thanks!
Amcoquillard (talk) 22:27, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- You're awesome! And thanks for finding that info on the "forest Idyl" very cool. I'm going to connect with my group and grab a little more information and maybe we'll send them your way to see if we're in the right direction. Have a good one! Amcoquillard (talk) 16:47, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hey The Interior! After meeting in class today, we've come up with a basic outline for how we are wanting to do our research. Below are the main sections we want to focus on. Eventually we want to combine the info that we all collected into an intro a brief summary paragraph. Hopefully you can let us know if you are going in the right direction and if there are any tips you can give us regarding research! Thanks for your help :) Amcoquillard (talk) 19:09, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!
Hey all :).
We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.
However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.
Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:06, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
A big thank you for trimming the BC section of the above article. With BC's list now much more manageable, I may motivate myself to find reliable references for the remaining BC entries. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 03:09, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, let's get that list cleaned up a bit. 'Berta's looking good! Those Squamish names were great. A friend of mine used to live in the low-income part of town, and we called his neighbourhood "Squampton". The Interior (Talk) 02:08, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- BC is nearly done. I'm having difficulty with "Sun City" for Kelowna. There are numerous businesses there named "Sun City X", but I've not yet found a reliable source that specifically refers to the city as the "Sun City". As for "Little Smoke", only sources I'm finding thus far are user-generated. Hwy43 (talk) 06:28, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Illecillewaet Glacier and the IPA
Hi. I had a look. The informal pronunciation as it is transcribed looked very unlikely in terms of the "ah"—too strong a vowel for unstressed syllables in English. So I listened to a couple of YouTube videos from Canada about the river/glacier. As I suspected, the "ah" is actually schwa (normally represented informally as "uh"). The IPA transcription would be:
ɪl ə ˈsɪl ə wɛt
This coincides with the pronunciation in the Columbia Enclyclopedia [1]. Note that their phonetic transcription differs slightly from the IPA:
They use ĕ instead of ɛ and ĭ instead of ɪ
But they represent the same sounds. (Another slight difference is that the CE puts the stress mark following the stressed syllable instead of preceding it as in the IPA.) See the charts here. Hope that helps. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 08:59, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- PS I separated the syllables in the IPA transcription above for ease of reading, but normally the transcription would be without the spaces. The CE also gives an alternative pronunciation for the final syllable which I also noticed on one of the videos: weɪt. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 11:30, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- Much thanks, Voced. When I visited last summer, the Parks girl definitely ended it with "wet", but she had a heavy Quebecoise accent, so who knows. I guess a complication with this one, and a lot of BC names derived from First Nations languages, is that the pronunciation is invariably a cock-up of what they used. I grew up near a place everyone called "Squilax", then I heard a Shuswap fellow say it. There was another syllable, some sort of voiced stop in the middle, and lots of back of the throat sounds. He tried to teach it to me, but it was hopeless. The Interior (Talk) 02:08, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- You are right (pardon my intrusion). See for example Seul Choix Light for the problem of cross language mispronunciation. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 13:22, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

GibraltarPediA Options followup
You participated earlier in Wikipedia talk:Did you know/GibraltarPediA Options, in which a proposed moratorium on Gibraltar-related DYKs was rejected and a set of options was agreed. There is currently a suggestion from editors who did not participate in that discussion that a moratorium should be imposed, overturning the earlier agreement. If you have any views on this, please feel free to comment at Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Time-sensitive DYK nomination. Prioryman (talk) 21:09, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
