Fire Emblem: Awakening (ファイアーエムブレム覚醒, Faiā Emuburemu Kakusei)[1] is a tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. Announced at a Nintendo 3DS press conference, it is an original game in the Fire Emblem series. It will have new features, but also retain elements from past entries. It is the first 3DS title to utilize paid downloadable content.[2]
On June 6, 2012, directly after a Nintendo 3DS software showcase at E3 2012, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that the game would be coming to North America under the title Fire Emblem: Awakening.[3] This was reiterated through Nintendo of America's official Twitter account.[4]
Gameplay
Fire Emblem: Awakening has elements of gameplay retained from previous entries in the series,[5] but also has various new features. The game features a new option to perform a team-up attack with a supporting character. The "Avatar" system, which featured in Hikari to Kage no Eiyū makes a return, allowing the player to create and customize their own playable character. There is a traversable world map, like in Gaiden and The Sacred Stones, where you can enter battles or purchase supplies from locations on the map. Special Skills from Seisen no Keifu and Path of Radiance make a return—characters can have five Skills at one time, with surplus Skills held in the character's Skill bank.[6]
Much like the Seisen no Keifu some characters will be able to pair up and have children. The player created My Unit is able to pair up and marry any opposite gendered character.[6]
In addition, Nintendo is releasing DLC for the game. The first content will be Marth to be distributed for free until the 31st of May when it will become a 250¥ paid download. Other confirmed characters include Roy from Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi (250¥), Leaf from Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 (350¥),[7] Alm (400¥) and Celica (350¥)[8] from Fire Emblem: Gaiden, Micaiah from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (300¥),[9] Ike and Elincia from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (350¥), Celice from Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (400¥), Ephraim (350¥) and Eirika (400¥) from Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones,[10] and Lyn from Fire Emblem (400¥),[11], Est, Catria, Palla (250¥) from Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi,[12],[13],[14]
Plot
The story focuses on the trials of Krom, the prince of the Holy Kingdom of Iris, and his companions during a turbulent era. When the neighbouring nation of Perezia starts acting suspiciously, Krom commands the vigilante force to keep his country at peace. Soon, he encounters an unholy force plaguing the lands and a masked swordsman claiming to be the Hero King of legends.[15]
Development
The game was announced at Nintendo's 3DS press conference ahead of the 2011 Tokyo Game Show.
Reception
Famitsu expressed negative feelings about the character designs, but otherwise gave the gameplay a positive review, with the final score being 36/40 (9/9/9/9).
