Andrew Dennis "Six" Biersack (born December 26, 1990), is the main songwriter and lead vocalist for the American rock band Black Veil Brides. He is the only founding member remaining in the group.

Biography

Andy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Chris and Amy Biersack. They moved to Cincinnati, Ohio when he was at an early age.[1][2]

Education

For his early education, Andy attended a Catholic elementary school, which he talks about in many interviews. Although he mentions how he was often harassed and ridiculed by classmates and teachers during his Catholic School days, he named his band, Black Veil Brides, after the term used centuries earlier referring to the nuns. Fascinated by the vibrant and colorful imagery of the Catholic religion, he made it a very large part of early the Black Veil Brides image as well. In high school Andy attended the Cincinnati School for the Creative & Performing Arts (SCPA) and took classes in Drama and Vocal Music. He left school before graduating to move to Los Angeles, 6 days after he turned 18, to seek fame and fortune there. [1][3] He took vocal training before recording Set the World on Fire to improve what he could do with his voice.[4]

Career

Andy performing with Black Veil Brides on the Sacred Ceremony Tour at Peabody's Concert Club in Cleveland, Ohio on July 24th, 2010.

As a musician

Andy was born into the rock scene, as his father was the lead vocalist in three bands of his own: "White Lies", "The Members", and "The Edge".[2][5] At the age of 14, Andy and a few friends got together to form his first band, called "Biersack" (although they only played one show).[3][6] Andy took their CD's with him to school and handed them out to everyone he knew.[1][2] This project eventually grew into what would later be known as Black Veil Brides.

As an actor

After leaving high school, he moved to Burbank, California to begin an acting career.[1][2][3] He has a small part in the AT&T commercial, "Confetti", as well as a 30 second spot in the Montana Meth commercial "Jumped".[3][7][8]

Stage injuries

Black Veil Brides & Andy have a very energetic stage presence, so as a result, Andy has suffered quite a few injuries, most notably his fall from a 15 foot pillar on June 18, 2011 in Hollywood. In an attempt to jump back onto the stage, he fell forward and hit his chest on the edge, which resulted in 3 ribs shattered (3 lower left), & one displaced.[9][10] They were only three songs into the set, but he got back up on the stage & finished it despite the severity of his injuries. That particular injury caused them to have to miss the first week of the Vans Warped Tour in 2011.[11][12] On October 26, 2011, while on another tour in the UK, he broke his nose on the drum riser while performing a gig in Luxembourg, resulting in more missed tour dates. However, two days later, he performed with Black Veil Brides in London before over 4,000. [13][14][15][16][17]

In an interview with Revolver Magazine, he stated:

I never anticipated seeing 40. I smoke two packs a day and drink like a camel. I just don’t really think about death. I know I’m gonna die one day, but if I can achieve all of my goals and live exactly the way I want to before then, I’ll have no regrets when I die. I don’t try to hurt myself like Iggy Pop or Marilyn Manson or anything — it’s just the byproduct of the chaos of being on stage.

[17]

Metallica art show

Andy painted a piece titled "Creeping Death" for the "Obey Your Master" art exhibit, which was a tribute to American heavy metal band Metallica. The painting depicts Metallica's past bass player Cliff Burton, who died when their tour bus flipped, with blood streaming from his eyes.[18][19][20][21] The piece is a 20” x 23” acrylic painting, priced at $777[22]

Personal life

Around the same time Sex & Hollywood was released, Andy was dating actress Scout Compton, and he wrote the song "The Mortician's Daughter" about her.[3][23][24] He is currently dating Automatic Loveletter's lead vocalist/guitarist, Juliet Simms. He appeared in the first episode of The Voice season two on February 5, 2011 when he went to support Juliet as she auditioned to become a contestant.[25] They have each others' nicknames tattooed on their hands; Andy has "Dragonfly" tattooed on his left hand, and Juliet has "White Rabbit" tattooed on her right.[26]

"Andy Six" and change in title

Andy's stage name was previously "Andy Six" up until around 2011 when he decided that he preferred to be called by his family/birth name, Andy Biersack, although he still accepts "Six" as a nickname.[27][28][29]

He wrote the following in his blog, explaining the change:

At the time I formed BVB, I felt that to properly provide an escape from life’s day to day drudgeries and create something that kids could look to as a source of strength, I would need to create a character. I felt it needed to be something that could not only inspire but also something that as a young kid, myself, I could hide behind…like an iron shield to deflect the outside world and all the horrible things people would say and do. Something that would stand out and be larger than life.

For me that character was 'Andy Six'

Andy Six could be all of the things that I wanted so badly to be as a teen. He was tough and confident. He stood up for those who needed help. He was the person I knew I wanted to become. I hoped that, over time, I would learn to be as confident in Andy Biersack as I was in Andy Six.

Move ahead to 2011, and here I am sitting in my tour bus on the road, 20 years old and the lead singer of Black Veil Brides. I am touring the world and meeting so many amazing friends and fans along the way. Our band has an entire army of people who believe in the same things that we do and who have all found strength in themselves as I have in my own life.

Andy Six is no longer the 'strong one.' Because of you, Andy Biersack passed him by long ago. Because of you, I have had the chance to experience things that I could have only dreamt of as a child growing up in Southern Ohio. I have talked with thousands of you and we have shared our stories. They are often quite similar. I’ve sung my lungs out with you at shows from Los Angeles to Tokyo and I have tried to share my heart with you in every lyric that I write. I have seen such an incredible devotion from you and, because of that, I think that “Andy Six” is no longer needed to shield myself. Because of my best friends in the entire world (my band mates) and our fans, there is no longer anything to shield myself from. BLACK VEIL BRIDES is now the shield for so many of you that I feel it is time that I let go of my childhood moniker and move on as a happy, thankful and strong member of our BVB Army.
