School colors

The pictures on the Athletic website (or on Flickr, rather) seem to show clearly that the SJU colors are Red and White, not Cardinal and Blue, as in the edit I just reverted. Does anyone have an actual cite one way or the other?--SarekOfVulcan 17:23, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Johnnie Rat

75.73.1.71 (talk · contribs) wrote in an HTML comment in the article: "The rat is not and never was the official mascot. Visit gojohnnies.com, the official site of SJU athletics, and you will not see or find a rat anywhere. That's beacuse the athletic department at Saint John's condones use of the rat as the school's mascot. A rat is not the image the athletic department wants portraying Johnnie athletics. Stop using "Johnnie Rat," which is a completely fabricated name by itself."

The rat may or may not be an "official" mascot, whatever that may mean, but it probably deserves mention somewhere in the article. It's got a pretty storied history: [2], not to mention all of the rat-branded merchandise for sale in the bookstore. android 79 04:53, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Before the Rat Section moved from its birthplace, the Rat mascot was born. Kurt Kaiser ’67, then a monk, designed it for a campus poster contest and won first place while hanging it from St. Boniface Hall....In 1972, Steve Conroy ’74, then the Saint John’s sports information director, started using the Rat on basketball programs, replacing the blue jay. Rats may not be the most attractive mascot, but they are entertaining....a new blue jay mascot was introduced. A student dressed in a blue jay outfit came out with the spotlight used for introductions shining on him. The crowd was dead silent, then it erupted in a chant of, “Kill the bird, kill the bird!” The bird was picked up and carried out of Saint John’s tradition. “The Rat is the only thing that has withstood the test of time,” Smith said. “It’s an unusual mascot: a harmless little rodent.”

I sent a message to someone within the Athletic Department and the response I got indicated that "we are the Johnnies." The individual didn't explicitly say that the Johnnies were the mascot...but went on to say that a Johnnie is not a rat. --Schulte 18:28, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting Article

Re: Anonymous's comment above. I agree - there should be two separate articles for these two institutions. While they share a website, they do not share a physical campus, vision for (no) growth, faculty, mindset, or administration. There is also much dissent about being so 'closely linked' by many of the students and monastics. I propose splitting the article and making references to the other school as needed; that would more accurately discribe the reality of the situation. Prevost Addition

Who added Prevost to the distinguished faculty section? If you don't post to explain your standard for why he should be mentioned I am going to remove his name. Sure he is published, but plenty of other professors have just as many publications to their name...plus I don't think any mention is made of Bresnahan who'd I'd expect to see if we're going to mention Prevost.
