Youth Teaching Youth (YTY) is a program where teens, who aspire to be teachers, go into elementary schools and teach fourth graders the importance of remaining drug free. This program is put on the by 4-H through the University of Minnesota Extension. Throughout the program the teachers use videos, games, role-playing and discussions. The teen teachers help the fourth graders "practice refusal skills, teach them how to deal with peer pressure and help them build their self-esteem." [1] This program was started because the high number of traffic accidents in the county. [2] While being a teen teachers, they all take a pledge not to consume alcohol, drugs or any substance similar to it. [3] After an application process of completing three letters of recommendation, they are then accepted into the program where they go through training on the material and how to run the class. The goal of teaching the fourth graders is to "promote positive youth development and plan quality experiences." [4]
