Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up is the first box set by Trinidadian-American recording artist Nicki Minaj, released on November 19, 2012, by Young Money, Cash Money, and Universal Republic.[1] Its music incorporates hip hop and R&B styles. Contributions to the album's production came from a wide range of producers including Boi-1da, T-Minus, and Juicy J.
A reissue of Minaj's second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), it is packaged with the original album, an EP with eight additional songs, and a DVD with behind-the-scenes footage.[2]
Upon its release, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up received generally favorable reviews from music critics. Three official singles have been released thus far: "The Boys", "Va Va Voom", and "Freedom". Minaj embarked on the Pink Friday: Reloaded Tour to promote the album and EP.
Background and development
Minaj commented at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, "I’m putting lots of new songs on there and I’m actually going to drop my new single like next week. Barbz, you are gonna spaz. You are gonna love it. You are gonna go crazy!"[3] Production of the project was a main focus on Minaj's three-part E! special, Nicki Minaj: My Truth, which aired in November 2012.[4] Its artwork was revealed on October 11, 2012, featuring an image of Minaj from her music video for "I Am Your Leader".[5]
On On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Minaj stated that "I feel like the music is such a better representation of me where I am now as an artist in my career. As long as people can hear the music, I’m good."[6] Minaj commented of the album's limited availability, "It's hard to get the album because the stores basically said that the last few re-releases they had put out did not do well and they didn't want to take a chance. Target and Wal-Mart are not selling the album, and Target is actually my biggest retailer. Best Buy only took limited [stock] because they wanted to play it safe. It kinda sets you up to fail."[7]
Composition
In an interview with Tim Westwood on BBC Radio 1, she stated that she believed The Re-Up was the best material she had released, also adding that it features less pop, and more hip hop material.[8]
Promotion
Minaj embarked on the Pink Friday: Reloaded Tour, a revamped version of the previous Pink Friday Tour, to support Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and The Re-Up, visiting arenas through 2012 and 2013. On November 18, 2012, Minaj performed "Freedom" at the American Music Awards.[9]

Gerrick Kennedy of the Los Angeles Times commented, "Sure, she flirts with dance pop and R&B balladry, but you can forgive her for wanting to satisfy different tastes. Here, it actually works."
