Maha Bodhi School is a government-aided double-session mixed primary school in Ubi, Singapore. Subjects offered are co-curricular activities, Chinese, Social studies, higher Chinese, English language, Mathematics, Music, Art, Health education, PE, Science, Civics and Moral education.
The Principal is Mrs Lim Bee Lay and the vice Principal is Mrs Tye Lee Chern and Ms Teo Sook Lin
The nearest MRT Station is Eunos Station, accessed by transferring from bus 63, the sole bus servicing the school's route. In the future, the school is expected to be linked to the Downtown Line via Ubi Station in 2017. <font=Gungsuh>
History
Maha Bodhi School was founded in 1946 by Reverend Chee Hong of Leng Feng Bodhi Institute, it is an extremely cool school that many admire for the extremely good teachers and a good environment espeacially after the school was renovated and a whole new block is made for sports and a school hall. the person who gave the task of founding a school based on Buddhist education to Miss Pitt Chin Hui and other Buddhist devotees. Maha Bodhi School was officially declared open on 12 January 1948, at the original shophouse at No. 743, Geylang Road, with an enrolment of 40 pupils. In 1950, the school board placed the sponsorship of the school under the Singapore Buddhist Federation for further development. Mr Lee Choon Seng, Chairman of the Singapore Buddhist Federation formed a school building committee to raise funds for the development of the school.
In 1951, due to the increasing enrolment, a site at 50, Lorong 34, Geylang, was acquired, and on 1 December 1951, the school was declared open by the British High Commissioner Mr Malcolm MacDonald. In 1957 the school became a Government-aided school.
The school building was extended in 1966 at a cost of $800,000 into a five-storey building. The extension was opened open on 20 December 1970. It became a Special Assistance Plan school, with increased emphasis on English and Chinese.
A piece of land in Ubi, of 18,000 square metres, was exchanged for the previous school campus under the "Quid Pro Quo Exchange" Scheme of the Ministry of Education. It now has around 2,100 students.
It underwent PRIME and temporarily moved to the old Macpherson Secondary School campus. The school moved back to the original premises in Ubi Avenue 1 in mid 2009. Now, it has been renovated to look more fresh.
School name
"Maha means Great in Sanskrit and Bodhi means Enlightenment, the way the Lord Buddha taught the world the truth and the path to Nirvana.
The school is named thus as it hopes for its students to be able to take up the moral and character of the Lord Buddha; to emulate His examples as they absorb knowledge, wisdom and scientific techniques of the world; to live morally, truthfully and wisely."
