Michael Palmer (born 14 July 1968) is a Singaporean politician and lawyer. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he is the Speaker of the House in the Parliament of Singapore.

Career

Palmer was called to the Singapore Bar in 1995 and joined the law firm Harry Elias Partnership as a legal consultant. He became a partner at the firm in 1998.[1]

Political career

Palmer was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC) in the 2006 general election.

Palmer served as the Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs from 2008 to 2011, and as the Chairman of the Home Affairs and Law committee in 2011.

At the 2011 general election, Palmer was elected as the MP for Punggol East Single Member Constituency (Punggol East SMC) after defeating candidates from the Workers' Party and the Singapore Democratic Alliance.[1] Palmer was then nominated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for the post of Speaker of Parliament, and was elected to this role by the House on 10 October 2011.[2]

Palmer announced his resignation from the PAP and Parliament on the 12th of December 2012, due to an "improper relationship with a PA staff member working in Pasir Ris Punggol GRC".[3]

Other roles

Palmer is also the Chairman of the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Council.

Education

Palmer attended the St Andrew's family of schoolsSt Andrew's Junior School, St Andrew's Secondary School and St Andrew's Junior College – which is affiliated to the Anglican Church of Singapore. He later read law in University College London and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) in 1992.

Family

Palmer is married and has one child. Palmer's father, Vernon Palmer, was a news presenter in Singapore.[4]
