On 21 November 2012, Roberto Di Matteo was sacked,[3] having suffered a 3–0 loss to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League the day before with Rafael Benítez replacing him as interim manager later that day until the end of the season.[4]

November

Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata was voted Premier League Player of the Month for October, after scoring three and assisting three.[36]Victor Moses scores a 93rd minute winner as Chelsea defeat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-2 to go top of Group E, the defeat of Shakhtar Donetsk was Shakhtar's first defeat since the 23rd October 2011. The other two Chelsea goals coming from Torres and an amazing 35 yard lob over Shakhtar's keeper Pyatov from Brazilian Oscar, that goal being Oscar's fourth Champions League goal.[37] Chelsea fail to win for their fourth Premier League in a row after West Brom beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Hawthorns, leaving the blues 4 points off the top, and without a win in November.[38] Chelsea go on the brink of elimination of the Champions League after getting thrashed 3–0 away to Juventus. Meaning that they need to defeat Nordsjaelland at home and need Shakhtar Donetsk to beat Juventus at the Donbass Arena. Otherwise Chelsea are destined to play in this seasons Europa League. This result leaves Chelsea with two wins in eight games and let in 18 goals in those eight games.[39] Chelsea sack manager Roberto Di Matteo in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after Chelsea lose at the Juventus Stadium. Di Matteo won only two of his last eight games and was only in charge for 262 days and won the 2011–12 Champions League and the 2011–12 FA Cup. Di Matteo's record at Chelsea was 24 wins out of a possible 42 with a win percentage of 57%.[40][41][42] The Blues appoint former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez in the evening as an interim manager, meaning he will take charge of the Blues until the end of the season. Rafael Benitez's first game will be at home against the current Premier League champions Manchester City.[43][44] Rafael Benitez's first act as Chelsea manager is appointing Boudewijn Zenden as his assistant. The former Netherlands midfielder played 42 games for Chelsea from 2001 to 2004 scoring 4 times. Zenden also played under Benitez for Liverpool in the 2005-06 season and the 2006-07 season before moving to Marseille.[45] Mark Clattenburg cleared by the FA over alleged comments to midfielder Jon Obi Mikel, and the FA charged Jon Obi Mikel with misconduct following his involvement in the incident.[46][47] Rafael Benitez's first game as Chelsea manager ends in a 0-0 draw with the current Premier League champions Manchester City. Despite not scoring Chelsea kept their first clean sheet since the 1-0 win over Stoke on the 22nd September, however Chelsea still haven't won a League Game since their 4-2 victory over Spurs on the 20th of October.[48] The West London Derby against Fulham ends 0-0 leaving Chelsea seven points off the top and six off second place.[49] The draw means Chelsea have only won once November, in the 3-2 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.[37] However despite not winning his first two games Rafael Benitez has kept two clean sheets, meaning Petr Cech has now kept the joint most clean sheets in 2012–13 Premier League.

The transfer fee has not been revealed. He was first option of three young Fluminense F.C players to join Chelsea, and joins Chelsea as part of the Deco deal [52][53] John Mikel Obi signs a 5 year contract with the Blues keeping him at the club until the summer of 2017. Mikel made his debut in August 2006, and has gone on to make 256 appearances and scored two goals.[54] Chelsea demolish Nordsjælland to record their biggest ever Champions League win and Rafael Benitez's first win as Chelsea manager. However because Juventus defeated Shakhtar Donetsk at the Donbass Arena 1-0, Chelsea exit the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League becoming the first Champions to exit the Champions League at the group stage.[55] Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been suspended for three games and fined £60,000 after admitting a charge of using threatening and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour in the match official's changing room at the end of the game against Manchester United on October 28.[32] This means he will miss the games against Sunderland, Leeds United in the quarter-finals of the League Cup and Aston Villa.[56][57] Chelsea end a run of 7 Premier League games without a win by beating Sunderland at the Stadium of Light with Fernando Torres bagging a brace and Juan Mata also scoring.[58] Chelsea get through to the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup Final by beating Mexican side C.F. Monterrey 3-1, with Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and an own goal by Dárvin Chávez.[59] Chelsea lose to Corinthians 1-0 in the World Club Cup Final in the Yokohama Stadium. The only goal of the game came in the 69th minute from striker José Paolo Guerrero, Gary Cahill was sent off in the 90th minute for an off the ball incident with Emerson. Gary Cahill's red card means he will miss the Capital One Cup quarter final match against Leeds.[60] Chelsea hammer Leeds 5-1 48 hours after coming back from Japan in the World Club Cup Final. After Luciano Becchio scored for Leeds, Juan Mata, Branislav Ivanovic, Victor Moses, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres score five after half time for Chelsea. The win against Leeds set them up for a semi final against Swansea, the first leg will be played at home and the second leg will be played away.[61][62] The Blues are drawn to Sparta Prague in the Europa League Round of 32. They will play the first leg away on the 14th February, and then playing the second leg at home on the 21st of February.[63] The Blues thrash Aston Villa 8-0 at the Bridge, with Fernando Torres, David Luiz, Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Oscar, Hazard and two from Ramires grabbing the goals. Frank Lampard scored his 190th goal for Chelsea on his 500th Premier League start, he is now 13 goals off the record held by Bobby Tambling.[64] The Blues defeat Norwich City 1-0 in a hard fought win at Carrow Road, with Chelsea's solitary goal coming from Juan Mata. [[65] Chelsea move two points above Tottenham Hotspur by becoming the first club to beat Everton at Goodison Park in the 2012–13 Premier League season. The Blues came from 1-0 down to win 2-1, with Frank Lampard scoring his 191st and 192nd Chelsea goals. [66] The victory over Everton gave Chelsea a good end for a wonderful year, in which Chelsea won the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League for the first time and the 2011–12 FA Cup for the fourth time in six years.

January

Chelsea executives enter talks with Newcastle striker Demba Ba, however the talks prove unproductive and the move will probably not go through.[67] However Chelsea trigger Ba's release clause on the 2nd January [68], reigniting the move to Stamford Bridge. On the same day Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge joins Liverpool for an undilclosed fee, yet the fee was reportedly £12 million. Sturridge played 96 games for Chelsea and scored 24 goals. [69] [70] Chelsea's 2013 got off to an awful start as they lose at Stamford Bridge to QPR, Rafael Benitez decided to rest inspirational attacking midfielders Juan Mata and Eden Hazard. Chelsea are now 14 points behind Manchester United with a game in hand. [71] Chelsea make their first signing of the transfer window by signing Newcastle United forward Demba Ba for £7 million, Ba has already scored 13 goals for Newcastle this season. [72]
