Kalymnos capital town is the picturesque port of Pothia, built in a dramatic natural amphitheatre. Here you'll find a real slice of Greek life with local people going about their everyday business. Enjoy shops, banks, an open-air cinema, cultural centre and harbourside cafes and bars from which to watch people and boats go by. Main roads can be noisy with motor bikes and cars but in the quiet, atmospheric side streets are quaint stores, craft workshops and traditional small houses. Look for the Italianate architecture and pastel washed houses, the silver-domed cathedral and the Monastery of St Savvas, perched on a hilltop overlooking the town. There are three museums devoted to sponge diving and folklore and a chance to see how sponges are processed and buy them at bargain prices. By night the town buzzes with outdoor life all year round and tavernas serve fresh, hearty food late into the evening.
