Yumi Ishiyama is one of the main characters of the animated series Code Lyoko. A girl of 14 years, she is the oldest of the protagonists. Yumi was born in Japan (hence its name, Ishiyama). Her family emigrated to France when she was little. Raised in the context of traditional Japanese values, she shows towards her parents total respect, sometimes even exaggerated. It attaches great importance to its origins, and later even considering returning to its roots.

It was after her meeting with Ulrich Stern, during a martial arts class, she became a Lyoko-Warrior. After she beat Ulrich in combat it, annoyed, managed to review and take his revenge. After a second battle, which ended with the victory of Ulrich and led to a draw, both suffered an attack from a monster energy sent by X.A.N.A. Guessing Ulrich knew more than he said, Yumi refused to let him go if he did not tell the truth. Pressed and believing that schools Yumi could be useful in combat, Ulrich took her to the factory, where she accepted after some hesitation to help. After disabling the first round, she agreed to continue until Jeremie finds a way to materialize Aelita, another protagonist. The latter is her best friend, she sees it as her little sister.

Yumi wears a look at the picture of his personality. Always dressed in black, she inspires at first coldness and distance. Quite brittle, and often sarcastic humor, it can seem especially hard and dry. But this appearance is only to better protect its generous interior and sensitive, because behind that mask hides a stuffed warmth and human qualities such as kindness, helpfulness, gentleness and sincerity.

Indeed, Yumi prefer to observe and get to know people before opening them, but once his confidence, it becomes an unfailing fidelity to the people she loves. Keen observer and psychologist, she has some easy to understand people. Rather sport (it is also good at martial arts Ulrich, with whom she often results), very unglazed (he has to see his reflexes), 100% natural, it is the perfect antagonist Sissi and seems the opposite of most teenagers accompanied by their best friends to prefer the company of boys. Intransigence, however, remains his most notable defect: it changes hardly notice, and is sometimes too stubborn. Yumi is also a very applied student who excels particularly in the humanities. Considered to have great potential school has the esteem of his teachers. It is also the only semi-resident group, the others being all internal (note: it is said throughout the series Yumi is external, but it is actually a half-boarder because she takes her lunch in the refectory of the college). Socially reports do not seem to worry much; nonsense deaf to the school yard, it seems to lend real attention to her group of friends. Some people admire, despise the other, it has nothing to do. The eyes are relatively boys turned toward her, attracted by its natural beauty and enigmatic (Ulrich, Johnny, Theo Gautier... Even Jeremiah Aelita good lover is not insensible to the charms of evil clone of Yumi in "image problem"). She, however, pushing, turning any attempt on their part in derision...

Yumi is probably the most mature and most thoughtful of the group. Imposing naturally respect his opinion is always taken into account. It is always within the group as being responsible for others: it is she who takes urgent decisions in the field, it is to her that we just seek advice. Thus, it often takes the lead in the absence of Jeremie.

Reports Yumi and Ulrich are complex and often ambiguous. The great complicity be friends. Respect (tense), admiration (repressed) and reciprocal observations (distance) between these two characters in a very strong relationship. Annoyed by the complexity of this relationship, she told Ulrich that they were "just friends and that's all" on a strictly platonic level.

Yumi dies temporarily by falling into the digital sea to save Aelita. At the end of the episode, however, the other Lyoko warriors-use program for materialization bring back to life. We also note that it is most often isolated from other on Earth: it is not in the same class is the only group to be half-boarder... Therefore, it is an easy prey to the attacks of X.A.N.A., which does not deprive of this advantage: many of the virus attacks aimed specifically ( Teddygodzilla, Lyoko least one...).

Yumi was in season 2, a relationship of friendship with William Ulrich has awakened jealousy deep, but it has grown tired of the advances of his comrade, and rejected in "The Secret". It is also the only one to oppose his entrance among the Lyoko warriors, but consents to the end of "overwork". Finally, it is the last Lyoko warrior devirtualiztied by him in "Last Round" and it launches this replica before rematerialize: "I knew it was a mistake to bring you into the group"...
Note:

• Japanese, Yumi Ishiyama is written "石山." Yumi means " rainbow "Ishi," stone "and Yama," mountain ".
• Yumi has in it many elements of Japanese culture, including a plush Totoro. She also holds colorful clothing, original and rather provocative, she never wears, but Odd will have fun wearing when found trapped in the body of Yumi (missing and being killed by it).
• Due to the black color of her clothes, Yumi is often mistaken for a Goth. However, a closer look at her, and the bright colors of her outfit on Lyoko in the first three seasons (See: paragraph about avatars, Article Lyoko warrior) proves the contrary.
