The Toyota Innova is a Toyota-designed Compact MPV i.e. being less than 4,600 mm (181.1 in) in length as per the European system of size classification, produced in Indonesia under supervision by Toyota Astra Motor since 2003. As with Toyota Kijang, which it replaced, the Toyota Innova is produced and first marketed in 2004 in Indonesia. Toyota Innova is part of Toyota's IMV program together with the Hilux Vigo pickup truck and the Fortuner SUV. Its official name in Indonesia is Toyota Kijang Innova, while for other countries it is simply Innova.
Powering the Innova is either a gasoline 2.0 liter 136 PS (100 kW) 1TR-FE VVT-i, a 2.7 liter (2TR-FE) version of the same, or a 2.5 liter 102 PS (75 kW) 2KD-FTV D4-D common rail diesel engine. Trim levels are J, E, G, and V. The 2.7 liter is only for the V, with automatic transmission. The Innova features a live rear axle and it is of front engined, rear wheel drive configuration. The newly added V variant adds ABS, leather seats and captain chairs.
The Innova is also sold in India (replacing Toyota Qualis), Malaysia (replacing Toyota Unser), the Philippines (replacing Toyota Revo), Taiwan (replacing outdated Toyota Zace surf), Vietnam (replacing outdated Toyota Zace) and Thailand. Unlike some of the Innova's competition, such as the TATA Sumo Grande, Chevrolet Tavera or the Mahindra Xylo, but like the newly launched Tata Aria, the Innova looks more like a minivan — in fact, its styling can be said to be similar to Toyota's other MPV offerings, namely the USDM Toyota Sienna and the Toyota Previa. The Toyota Innova is also available in Brunei, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Engine
Toyota Innova uses 1TR-FE engine, unlike the 7K series engine found in Toyota Kijang. The engine produces more power, but achieves poor gas mileage of 6-8 km/l (14.1-18.8 mpg‑US). After 2007, all gasoline engine is now equipped with a closed loop combustion system, which increases gas mileage at expense of reduced power. Based on information from the Auto Bild Indonesia test, it is now capable of 11-12 km/l figure (about 27.0 mpg‑US).
There is also more powerful 2.7L gasoline variants which uses Toyota Fortuner 2TR-FE engine. It was later pulled from the Indonesian market due to low demand. The diesel variants use turbocharged 2KD-FTV engine which produces 101hp of power and 260Nm of torque. Both gasoline and diesel version are available in either manual or automatic transmission. All variants use RWD configuration.
Variants
J
In Indonesia and the Philippines, this is the most basic edition of the Innova. It has a standard type single disc CD tuner with only two speakers (front only) and a plastic interior, and receives steel wheels with full hubcaps. It has manual keys (no remote control), no rear wiper, and no foglamps. In Indonesia, there is also a 5 seater version for this variant, available by request for commercial purpose only.
E
In most areas, the E variant is the most basic edition of the Innova. It has manual keys (no remote control), no rear wiper, and no foglamps. It usually has a standard tape player (cassette with manual tuner), and has only 2 speakers (on the front only). It is usually the cheapest version, sold for around 200 million rupiahs (about US$ 22.000).
In the Philippines and Indonesia, this is the middle class edition of the Innova. The 2011 facelifted versions receives features taken from the now discontinued first generation G-version. It gets a rear wiper, power mirrors, doorlocks, and windows, and also a standard CD/MP3 tuner with four speakers. The E also has ABS and a driver-side airbag.
G
The G variant has enhanced features like color-keyed wing mirrors and door handles, mouldings, a chrome tailgate garnish, and in the interior wood grain-styled trim on center console and door switch base. The dashboard features LED backlighting with a dial which you can turn to adjust the brightness. This variant is the best selling Innova in Indonesia.
V
The V variant is the top-of-the-line variant of the Innova. It has fog lamps, leather seats, digital environment control panel, a DVD navigation system and is available with captain seats. It also has chrome finish rear view mirrors and handles. It costs nearly Rp 250.000.000. In the Philippines, the V variant comes with two engines, the 1TR-FE 2.0 L VVT-i gasoline engine and the 2KD-FTV 2.5L D4-D diesel engine. Both are equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission and cost around PhP 1,140,000 for the gasoline and PhP 1,195,000 for the diesel. The V variant also equip with ABS and Airbag system. In Indonesia, until 2009 facelift, the "V" receives the larger and more powerful 2.7 L 2TR-FE (which also powered Toyota Fortuner), only in conjunction with an automatic transmission. Some journalists nicknamed this 2.7 L 2TR-FE powered engine as "Super Innova".
Innova Sport Runner (Philippines only)
In the Philippines, Toyota released an upgraded variant of the Innova E trim called the Sport Runner. It is only available with a 2.5L 2KD-FTV D4-D turbo diesel engine and has a choice between an automatic or a manual stick-shift transmission. It also has power mirrors, door locks, windows, and a 1-DIN CD/MP3 tuner with four speakers. Unlike the E variant, however, it has fog lamps, semi-fabric seats, color-coded door mirrors and handles, and a high mount stop lamp. It too has ABS and a driver-side airbag. It costs PhP 1,064,000 for the automatic version and PhP 999,000 for the manual version.
Facelift
===2009===
Facelifted Toyota Innovas were first spotted in Indonesia. It has restyled front and rear bumper, new front grille and rear tail lamps. The V variants use updated rims.
The updated Innova also features automatic climate control, side door impact beams, as well as new extras such as parking sensors and an in-dash CD changer.[1] It is on sale in Far East Asian and Middle East markets. The new innova was launched in November 2008 in the Philippines and on January 28, 2009 in India. In Indonesia, the facelifted versions include the E variant, which now features the parts from the first-generation G variant.
2011
On July 15, 2011, PT Toyota Astra Motor launched a major facelift models called Grand New Kijang Innova. It features revised headlights, grille, bonnet, bumpers & tail lights. The interior is updated with new steering wheel, new air-conditioning knobs (for non V variants) and revised center-dash. There are now 7 variants available in Indonesia: J, J Dress-Up, E, G, G Luxury, V and V Luxury. Luxury badge indicates the use of two captain seats in the second row.
Markets outside Indonesia
Malaysia
The Innova is launched on the 27th of May, 2005 with the tagline "Got Class" because of its space. The Innova currently offered by UMW Toyota Motors Malaysia comes in two variants. Both are powered by Toyota's 1TR-FE 2.0 litre engine featuring VVT-i. The powertrains available are either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic with ECT.
Some of the features that the 2.0G offers are ABS, multi-information display, self illuminated meters, map lamps, illuminated ashtray, climate control and dual air bags. The 2.0G looks far more upmarket compared than does the 2.0E as chrome trims are added, whereas the lower grade 2.0E has black coloured door handles and front grille.
The Innova is a slow-seller in Malaysia because of its frame and ladder chassis, poor weight to power ratio and absence of a diesel variant unlike the preceding Toyota Zace. Diesels are often favoured in this segment because of improved fuel economy and high low-rpm torque. Moreover, the rise of reconditioned imported cars such as the Toyota Wish and Toyota Estima further slows down its sales. Nissan Grand Livina, Proton Exora and Perodua Alza have had better sales because of their monocoque body, which leads to better handling and lower asking price.
India
In the Indian auto market Toyota Innova is available with twelve variants. Three variants of Toyota Innova come with a petrol engine option which is powered by 2.0L, 1998cc, 1TR-FE, Gasoline, 4 Inline Cylinder petrol engine with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection). The EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) technology enhances the fuel efficiency and performance of the vehicle. This engine delivers high engine performance and produces 132 PS of maximum power at 5600rpm with 181 Nm of maximum torque at 4000rpm.
The diesel variants of Toyota Innova are powered by 2.5L, 2494cc, 2KD-FTV, diesel engine with Turbocharger, 4 Inline Cylinder and with Common-Rail Direct Injection fuel supply system. This diesel engine produces 102 PS of maximum power at 3600rpm and 200 Nm of maximum torque at 1400~3400rpm.
