Neurotransmitter

A neurotransmitter is a chemical used for signalling between neurons. The neurotransmitter is passed between neurons at the synapse across the synaptic gap.

There are many neurotransmitters; some of the important ones are:

• Aminoacids:
  • from asparagine:
    • aspartate
  • from glutamine:
    • glutamate
    • GABA
    • glycine

• Monoamines (in the order of their synthesis):
  • from phenylalanine:
    • dopamine
    • epinephrine
    • norepinephrine
  • from tryptophan:
    • serotonin
  • from histidine:
    • histamine

  • • acetylcholine
