Prisoners' Wives is a BBC drama series, created and written by Julie Gearey and starring Emma Rigby, Polly Walker, Pippa Haywood and Natalie Gavin, with supporting cast including Jonas Armstrong and Iain Glen. The series centres around four very different women, each struggling to cope with a significant man in her life serving time in prison.[1][2][3] The series is set in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

There will be a second series but without Emma Rigby or Jonas Armstrong.[4] [unreliable source?] Series two will be a slightly shorter run of four episodes, which will air in 2013.[5]

  • Emma Rigby as Gemma, Her life comes crashing around her when armed police storm her house and arrest her husband on suspicion of murder
  • Polly Walker as Francesca, a colourful and glamorous career criminal’s wife
  • Pippa Haywood as Harriet, a respectable middle-aged upstanding member of the local community whose son is in jail
  • Natalie Gavin as Lou, her boyfriend Sean is serving time on her behalf

Prisoners’ Wives is executive produced for Tiger Aspect by Roanna Benn, Rebecca de Souza and Greg Brenman (Tiger’s Head of Drama) and for the BBC by Christopher Aird. Damon Thomas and Harry Bradbeer direct with Anna Ferguson as producer and Abi Bach as co-producer. The series was commissioned for BBC One by Ben Stephenson and Danny Cohen for airing in early 2012.

Written by Julie Gearey, this relationship-based ensemble drama is set and filmed in Sheffield and stars Emma Rigby, Polly Walker, Pippa Haywood and Natalie Gavin, supported by actors including Jonas Armstrong and Iain Glen. The series music is composed by Daniel Pemberton.

Ratings

The series opened with 4.92m, according to overnight figures, which was a 20.1% audience share.[6]
