Sephora is a French brand and chain of cosmetics stores founded in Paris in 1970, and acquired by French conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton and Moet Hennessy) in 1997. The Sephora chain includes more than 1,750 points of sale in 30 countries across the world.[2] Carrying more than 100 brands, along with their own private label, Sephora offers beauty products including makeup, skincare, fragrance, hair care, bath and body products, and hair and make-up tools.

Overview

Sephora opened its first United States store in New York City in 1998.[3][4] Its North American headquarters is located in San Francisco, with marketing offices in New York City and Montréal. Sephora is owned by the Paris-based LVMH.

Sephora, Toronto Eaton Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Sephora launched its online store to the U.S. in 1999 and into Canada in 2003 [3] Sephora currently operates over 1,300 stores in 27 countries worldwide.[5]

In 2013, the brand debuted fragrance collections with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and a makeup line with Marc Jacobs.[6]

Sephora is a combination of "sephos", which is Greek for "beauty" and the name Zipporah, the exceptionally beautiful wife of Moses in the Book of Exodus.[1] The name Zipporah in the Greek Old Testament (LXX or Septuagint) is rendered, Σεπφώρα Sephora. The Sephora logo is a white "S" shaped flame against a black background.

Sephora Beauty Insider

The Sephora Beauty Insider is a rewards program that offers customers coupons, discounts, and points (to redeem for deluxe size samples) for frequent buyers. The program is available to all Sephora customers and is free for sign-up. Each dollar spent is equal to one point, every one hundred points offers a free "deluxe" sample-size product (from a luxury brand). There is also a 500 point redemption level, which usually consists of a boxed set of multiple samples. Beauty Insider members also receive sample-size gifts on their birthday. When a member spends $350 in one calendar year, they are upgraded to a Very Important Beauty Insider membership (V.I.B.) and will retain that status throughout the following year.[1]

Sephora Private Label

Sephora carries a private label featuring make-up, skin care, beauty tools, and accessories. Packaging for the line features the company's elongated flame logo in standard black print.

Sephora Inside J.C. Penney

Sephora began opening stores inside J.C. Penney in October 2006. Today, there are Sephora locations in more than 300 J.C. Penney stores across the country. Utilizing a smaller footprint (approximately 1,500 square feet) than a standard Sephora store, each one is located in the center of the J.C. Penney store and features the signature Sephora look and beauty assortment.

As the exclusive beauty offering in J.C. Penney, Sephora inside J.C. Penney features products from more than 200 beauty brands. These include color from NARS, Bare Escentuals, MAKE UP FOR EVER and Smashbox; innovative skincare lines such as Peter Thomas Roth, Murad and Philosophy; face and body tools from Clarisonic; hair care from Living Proof; and fragrance offerings from Dior, DKNY, Marc Jacobs and Dolce & Gabbana. Also featured is Sephora’s own collection of makeup, skincare, tools and accessories. Inside all Sephora inside J.C.
