Hidalgo
Appearance
Hidalgo (nobility) (Fidalgo in Galician and Portuguese) is a traditional title of persons of the Spanish nobility or gentry. The word is a contraction of the phrases 'hijo de algo', literally "a son of something." Despite this informal-sounding term, the Spanish court rigorously regulated who was and who was not entitled to call himself an hidalgo. Also families that have the last name Hidalgo. By extension the word is also used in Spanish for a person of noble and generous spirit (gentleman).
