Biography

Early life

He was born January 19 in Rotterdam, Holland. He grew up there and in Suriname before settling in Houston, Texas (USA) in his teens.[1]

Career

DJ Sun has hosted Soular Grooves on KPFT since 1995 and hosts RockSteady Mondays at The Flat in Houston.

DJ Sun started a radio show in 1995, Soular Grooves on KPFT 90.1 FM, Pacifica Network. The music played on Soular Grooves has the aesthetics of soul and jazz, irrespective of bpm or tempo. The show has embraced anything from drum and bass, to hip hop, to house, and downtempo. DJ Sun started his DJ career in 1993 and has maintained a career during which he has earned Houston Press DJ of The Year awards seven times between 1999 and 2009 (the last being in 2009). In his recording career he has released two EPs[2] (http://www.houstonpress.com/2009-02-19/music/dj-sun-para-ep/) and a full-length album, "One Hundred".

DJ Sun’s style has been described by music writers like Shea Sherrano of The Houston Press weekly [3] as varied with a distinct signature for loungey, groove-oriented eclectic music shaped by his exposure to music while living abroad.

In 2007, DJ Sun became a music producer with the release of Monday Drive (Alternate Take Records), an EP reflective of his varied background, blending styles and nostalgic aesthetics into a down to midtempo paced EP. DJ Sun released Para, a 12” EP which included remixes from DJ Sabo (Sol Selectas), J Boogie (OM) and Genre Jazz (Presto and Mhax Montes), released in November 2008.

[4] [5] [6] DJ Sun, on March 16, 2012, performed at SXSW 2012 (Austin, TX) with a live band consisting of Tim Ruiz (bassist for La Mafia), El John (percussionist for Thievery Corporation), Meghan Hendley (keyboardist), Marcus Gausepohl (guitarist), Lisa Harris (lead vocalist), and Leah Alvarez (background vocalist) at The Wax Poetics Magazine Showcase. DJ Sun used a Micro-Korg and MPC-1000, while on stage with the band.

On January 15, 2013, DJ Sun released "One Hundred", a 19-track album featuring guests Tim Ruiz (La Mafia), Leah Alvarez, Jessica Zweback, Mark Sound, Meghan Hendley, and Martin Perna. [7][8] [9]
