The Western Iowa Conference is a high school athletic conference made up of bigger 1A and smaller 2A schools located mostly in the greater Council Bluffs area. The teams in the conference have a deep-rooted history together. Most of the schools have been with the conference throughout.

History

The Western Iowa Conference was organized in 1972 through the merger of the former Tri-County and Southwest Iowa Conferences. It originally consisted of the following twelve schools: AvoHa of Avoca, Carson-Macedonia, Elk Horn-Kimballton, Griswold, Iowa School for the Deaf of Council Bluffs, Missouri Valley, Oakland, Shelby-Tennant, Treynor, Tri-Center of Neola, Underwood, and Walnut. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the smaller schools in the conference all left. Walnut, Elk Horn-Kimballton, Shelby-Tennant, and Carson-Macedonia joined the Rolling Hills Conference, and Iowa School for the Deaf became an independent. It was also around this time that Audubon joined the conference. AvoHa and Shelby-Tennant merged in 1991 to become AHST, and Oakland and Carson-Macedonia merged in 1993 to become Riverside.
