New Delhi World Book Fair
The New Delhi World Book Fair, held in Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, is India's oldest book fair. Started in 1972, this biennial event takes place in early February, and is organized by the National Book Trust, India (NBT). Apart from publication, NBT promotes National readership policies and also supports the growing markets of neighboring countries. The National Centre for Children Literature (NCCL), a wing of NBT organizes children events in the Children pavilion to promote children literature and the national 'Readers Club' movement.
India is the third biggest market for English publications with almost 12,000 publishers that publish around 90,000 titles a year in more than 18 languages. India's main publishing is in the Indian languages. The 2006 NDWBF witnessed 1.294 exhibitors on 38.000 square metres (2004: 1.205 / 32.546); 1 million visitors (30% plus). 18 countries: USA, Bangladesh, India, France, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Canada, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Germany.
The 20th New Delhi World Book Fair 2012 was held in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from 25 February 2012 to 4 March 2012 organised by National Book Trust, India NBT with numerous activities organised by NBT. The fair was inaugurated by Hon'ble HRD Minister Sh kapil Sibal. The CSR initiative by the publishing industry and Sagi to launch Pink Ribbon Book Tag at the Book Fair to support the Indian Cancer Society for a humanitarian cause, was launched by Smt Priya Dutt ,M.P ; Dr S.Y.Quareshi, Chief Election Commissioner of India & Sh Sandeep Marwah. The biennial World Book Fair now annual with the 21st edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair 2013 scheduled from 4 February-10 February at Pragati Maidan New Delhi . Under an MOU ,the annual event organised jointly by National Book Trust, India & ITPO (Indian Trade Promotion Organisation) with the 21 st edition theme on Indigenous Voices: Mapping India's Folk & Tribal Literature . Hon'ble HRD Minister of State, Dr Shashi Tharoor inaugurated the Fair, presided by Dr Karan Singh, M.P & Chairman Indian Council for Cultural Relations.The contemporary Youth that constitutes almost 1/3 rd of population, with high segment of readership participated in numerous events to promote the National readership programme. Some first time events included Cosplays, School Librarians meet,authors corner, artist gallery ,counsellors desk in the Children & Youth pavilion. An annual National Debut Youth Fiction Writers meet 2013 instituted in association with Consortium Octet & literary expert guests Dr Judith Oriel,French Attache, Dr Pratibha Ray, Janpeeth Award winner, Aditi,University youth representative to promote the youth to greater interest in readership. France was the guest country for the 21 New Delhi World Book Fair 2013. Chairman NBT: Sh A.
