Matarangi is a small modern tourist town on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. The small town consists of 300 permanent residents and over 7000 holiday residents during the summer periods of late December to February. Matarangi is very new, having only started development since 1985 and is built on a white sand spit.
The town is very wealthy, appealing to well-off tourists and holiday makers. Matarangi is well known for its prestige, luxury and residents' lavish lifestyles. Its shopping center, though small, has much to offer including a dairy, cafe, restaurant, liquor store, hardware and hire centre, real estate agents, fire station, & health spa, along with "The Dunes" eighteen-hole Golf Course and a bowling green.[1] Throughout the township there are many tennis courts, parks and reserves, a small airstrip, and a boat ramp providing harbour access; all within sight and sound of the 4km long white-sand ocean beach. 36°43′55″S 175°40′14″E / 36.73194°S 175.67056°E
