New York Film Academy - School of Film and Acting (NYFA) is a film school and acting school based in New York City, Universal Studios, California; Queensland, Australia; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. NYFA offers degree programs (Bachelors of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts) as well as one-year and two-year conservatory programs and short term intensive programs in Filmmaking, Acting for Film, Producing, Screenwriting, Digital Filmmaking, 3D Animation, Photography, Game Design, Cinematography, Documentary, Broadcast Journalism, Musical Theatre, Digital Editing Programs at various locations throughout the world. History

The New York Film Academy was founded in 1992 by Jerry Sherlock, a former film, television and theatre producer.[2] Originally located at the Tribeca Film Center, NYFA moved in 1994 to Union Square, in a large building once housing the New York political machine Tammany Hall. As of 2012, the school has 400+ employees and over 6,000 students per year.[citation needed]

Philosophy

The New York Film Academy's philosophy is based on a "learning by doing" approach with intensive, hands-on training. Most students work outside their specialities to learn the art of filmmaking by fulfilling each of the key creative positions in the making of a film. The New York Film Academy believes that film is the international literature of our times, through which individuals, communities, and nations express their most profound visions of humanity to the world.

NYFA founder Jerry Sherlock explained to the Times in 2005 that he opened the school after hearing interest from parents and older relatives of aspiring young filmmakers, and that he wanted to focus on practical experience.

NYFA's programs include film directing, film producing, screenwriting, cinematography, film editing, documentary filmmaking and courses in acting. In 2007 NYFA partnered with NBC News to start a program in digital journalism.[3] In 2010 the contract between NYFA and NBC expired, but the Broadcast Journalism programs at NYFA continue to be offered with many of the original faculty.

Partnerships

Since 2007, the New York Film Academy has been collaborating with museums and major art institutions to organize cultural and filmmaking education initiatives for teens and young adults. The New York Film Academy's partnership with the world renown Metropolitan Museum of Art is in its 3rd year. Working closely with each individual institution, the Film Academy contributes resources in curriculum development, teaching staff, and equipment to deliver programs that teach students the creative art of the moving image, as well as the importance and value of all forms of art and the institutions that preserve, protect and display them. Corporate partnerships

  • Sony Animation[10] approached the New York Film Academy to create a special acting workshop to train Sony animators to better understand the actor's process and appropriate character behavior. The animators were taught acting techniques, scene analysis and beat breakdown from the actor's perspective, as well as character development to enhance their overall visual storytelling abilities.
  • Time Warner Cable Connect A Million Minds partnered with the New York Film Academy at its Union Square headquarters. Students from East Side Community High School and Marte Valle Secondary School in the Lower East Side participated in a workshop to learn about the significance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills required in the film industry to bring movies to life.[11]
  • The New York Jets and the New York Film Academy have partnered together to start a brand new hands-on Sports Photography Program. [12]The program will offer two 16-week hands-on immersion workshops in Sports Photography and Sports Broadcasting for sports fans and aspiring media professionals in a real-world sports environment. As part of the program, students will create a media portfolio while covering the New York Jets at select events during the 2012 football season and throughout the calendar year.[13]

Scholarships

Film or Acting School students who demonstrate financial need can qualify to receive up to $15,000 for NYFA's one year, two year, or MFA programs.[citation needed] Applicants are required to show a credible need for financial assistance through documentation, as well as submit a personal statement explaining why they would like to attend the New York Film Academy. To date the New York Film Academy has donated over a million dollars in the form of scholarships[14] to the New York City Department of Education.

NYFA draws teachers from the Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia University, AFI Conservatory, University of Southern California, Stanford University, Harvard University, Yale University and University of California Los Angeles.[15]
