Nintendo 3DS system software is a set of updatable firmware versions and software frontend on the Nintendo 3DS video game console. Updates, which are downloaded via the system's Internet connection allow Nintendo to add and remove features and software. All updates also include all changes from previous updates.

The current version of the system software, 5.0.0-11, was made available on March, 25th 2013.

HOME Menu

The HOME Menu is a GUI similar to the Wii's "Wii Menu" and DSi's "DSi Menu" for the Nintendo 3DS video game system which allows launching Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS game cards, 3DS applications, or DSiWare titles. The menu can display up to 120 applications and folders. On the top screen, information such as wireless signal strength, date and time as well as battery life is displayed while on the bottom-screen, application icons are displayed. Using the home button, users can bring up the HOME menu while in a 3DS application, allowing them to use certain applications. Like the DSi, game cards can also be hot-swapped while in the menu.

Applications

Multitasking Applications

The Nintendo 3DS is capable of opening applications simultaneously. Once an application is running, the user can push the HOME button to suspend it temporarily and to open the HOME Menu. They can then open other specially designed multitasking applications built into the Nintendo 3DS. These applications can be opened without closing the suspended software or application.

  • Game Notes - Screenshots of both the top and bottom screens of a suspended software is present to help users write and save notes without closing their game.
  • Friend List - Users can add up to 100 friends by exchanging friend codes, which can also be viewed here.
  • Notifications - SpotPass and StreetPass notifications
  • Internet Browser
  • Camera - A lightweight version of Nintendo 3DS Camera with most features omitted. Can be accessed by pressing the L or R button.
