The Phantom Pain is an upcoming video game to be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game deals with an amputated middle-aged man who awakens from a coma, and attempts to escape a hospital infested with visions of supernatural horrors and an invasion of an unknown group of soldiers. Following its reveal at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards, speculation began to surface surrounding the identity of its developer, Moby Dick Studio, and indications that the game is actually the next installment in the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Solid 5. On March 21, 2013, Hideo Kojima posted a photo via Twitter of a still image of an upcoming GDC 2013 trailer which has the font from The Phantom Pain trailer, as well as the letters 'TPP' in files name.

Development

The Phantom Pain and its first teaser trailer was officially unveiled on December 7th, 2012 at the Spike Video Game Awards. The game was credited to a Swedish developer known as Moby Dick Studio, whose mission statement reads that it aims to "deliver an uncompromising, exciting, and touching game experience to people all around the globe."[1]

Reactions

After the teaser trailer aired, speculation began to surface from various publications that The Phantom Pain was connected to the Metal Gear franchise. Critics noted the protagonist showed a resemblance to Big Boss, the game's graphics exhibited similarities to those of the Fox Engine (an engine intended for future Kojima Productions titles), and that when using the same font, the title "Metal Gear Solid V" fits perfectly in the indents and negative space above the game's logo.[2][3]

It was also pointed out the first name of the studio's head, "Joakim Mogren", is an anagram of "Kojima", along with a WHOIS record that stated that the studio's domain name had only been registered about two weeks prior to the announcement, and that several staff members in attendance with Moby Dick Studio shirts were sitting in a VIP area intended for Konami (publisher of the Metal Gear series).[2][4] Hideo Kojima jokingly stated he was impressed by the trailer and how Mogren was inspired by Metal Gear.[5]

On the March 14 GTTV episode, Joakim Mogren, appeared with a bandaged face, similar to the bandaged man in The Phantom Pain's trailer. When asked whether the game would be on current gen consoles or next gen consoles, he replied that he can't tell anyone at the moment, although he did confirm that there was going to be new information unveiled relating to the game at the 2013 Game Developers Conference. He then showed off some screenshots via iPad. It was then pointed out by Geoff Keighley that the Fox Engine logo was present in the bottom right corner of some of the screenshots, to which Mogren appeared nervous and the interview abruptly changed into a video game review segment. There is speculation about the bandaged Joakim Mogren actually being game designer and Kojima's friend Cliff Bleszinski, who resigned from Epic Games after completing Gears of War 3 and has been reported to start his own development studio.Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page).

On March 16, 2013, "Joakim Mogren" uploaded a new teaser for what seemed to be footage in black and white, with elements alluding to the Metal Gear Solid series. vg247 later emailed Konami to find out whether the teaser was legitimate after it became apparent that it wasn't in the official channels. Konami has yet to respond.[6]

Kojima later posted an image in his Twitter hinting he was working as the director and writer of The Phantom Pain.[7]
