History

2012-present: K-Pop Star, Debut and First Love

In 2012, Lee Hi finished as the runner-up on Survival K-Pop Star,[3] against Park Ji Min and was eventually signed by YG Entertainment CEO, Yang Hyun-suk.[4] On May 12, 2012, it was announced that Ha Yi will be debuting with a girl group called SuPearls who was originally formed during Survival K-Pop Star. She was set to replace Ji Min who was originally part of the band during the show but had decided to sign with JYP Entertainment instead after winning.[5]

On October 8, 2012, Ha Yi collaborated with pop group Epik High with their first song in about three years entitled "It's Cold".[6] On October 24, it was announced that Ha Yi will be debuting as a solo artist under the stage name, "Lee Hi", with the single "1.2.3.4".[7] The single was released on October 28. The song was written by Masta Wu and produced by CHOICE37 and Lydia Paek. The music video was directed by director Han Sa Min, who also did 2NE1‘s “Lonely” and Big Bang’s “Blue” and “Monster."[8] The song reached #1 on all the main music charts.[9] The song ranked #1 for three weeks.[10] She also dominated montly charts.[11][12] She has ranked on the top spot 11 times on the hourly real time charts, which set a record for female soloists in 2012[13] She performed "1.2.3.4" on Inkigayo on November 4.[14]

Her second single, “Scarecrow”, was released on November 22, 2012.[15]

Following Ha Yi's successful debut as a solo artist, her company made a sudden announcement on February 13, 2013, that her anticipated girl group, Su Pearls, will no longer be continuing as an ensemble and that the other remaining members have been dropped. She will instead continue as a solo artist.[16][17]

On February 24, YG Entertainment released a teaser image for Lee Hi's debut album. On the image it had three dates “March 1st?“, “March 7th?” and “March 21st?“. The next day, YG Entertainment released another teaser image with the words 'mini?', 'single?' and 'album?'. The next day another teaser image was released stated that Lee Hi will be releasing an intro song called 'Turn It Up' on March 1st. On March 2nd, another teaser image with the words 'It's Over' next to an image of Lee Hi holding lipstick. It was revealed that the album, titled "First Love" will be released as a digital only mini-album on March 7th featuring 5 songs, with the full album release on March 28th featuring 10 songs. The title tracks, "It's Over" and "Rose" will be released on these dates respectively.[18][19]
