Clea Helen D'Etienne DuVall (born September 25, 1977) is an American actress. She is best known for her role as Sofie on the television series Carnivàle as well as for films such as The Faculty (1998), Girl, Interrupted (1999), The Grudge (2004), and Heroes (season 1, 2006). She is also known for her role as Cora Lijek in the Oscar-winning film Argo.
Early life
DuVall was born in Los Angeles, California, the only child of Rosemary (née Hatch) and Stephen DuVall. Her father is also an actor, mostly remembered as Connor from the Steven Seagal film The Keeper.[citation needed] Her parents divorced when she was 12. After her mother's remarriage, DuVall dropped out of high school and moved into her own apartment.[1] She sought entertainment in movies and television programs, memorizing entire scenes. DuVall decided she wanted to be an actress, and returned to high school, this time the Los Angeles County High School of the Arts, while working to support herself.[1] She is not related to actors Robert Duvall, Shelley Duvall, or Clea Lewis.[2]
Career
Prior to making her debut in Little Witches, she worked in a coffee shop. She appeared in various films and episodes of TV shows such as ER and Buffy the Vampire Slayer before her breakthrough role as a protagonist goth student in Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty. She then portrayed an institutionalized pathological liar in the acclaimed Girl, Interrupted, as well as a lesbian enrolled in 'therapy camp' in the indie hit But I'm a Cheerleader. Major roles in The Astronaut's Wife, Ghosts of Mars and Thirteen Conversations About One Thing followed.
After appearing in The Laramie Project, Identity and 21 Grams, DuVall starred in HBO's Emmy Award-winning Carnivàle, which ran from 2003–2005. During that time, she also starred in Helter Skelter (which earned her a Satellite Award nomination) and The Grudge.
Other projects include Itty Bitty Titty Committee, David Fincher's Zodiac and a recurring role on NBC's hit series Heroes. In 2008 she starred with Anne Hathaway in Passengers.
More recent projects include roles in the 2012 Ben Affleck film Argo, in which she portrayed Cora Lijek, a Japanese American and one of six American diplomats rescued from Iran in 1980, and the second season of the TV series American Horror Story.
DuVall has directed a short film called It's Not Easy Being Green, starring Leisha Hailey, Carnivàle co-star Carla Gallo and herself.[3] She also took promotional pictures for Uh Huh Her.[4]
