Pink Friday is the first fragrance created by American recording artist Nicki Minaj with Give Back Brands,[1] first released on September 22, 2012. The bottle was designed by Lance McGregor of Paul Meyers and Friends. Elizabeth Arden bought the licence for the fragrance, which will distributed by Elizabeth Arden Inc. to major retail stores worldwide, including Macy's and Nordstrom.[2][3]

Conception

Development

Minaj first alluded to "Pink Friday" in her verse on Drake "Make Me Proud", rapping, "It's MAC, OPI, and a fragrance too/ apparel I'm dominating in every avenue" Mark Cheatham, a music agent of CAA, confirmed the development of the fragrance, saying, "With her team, we're all working and in discussions on a fragrance deal"[4] Minaj and Give Back Brands worked on the fragrance throughout 2011 and early 2012, and was planned to be released in late 2011, from an interview with BET Minaj stated "I like scents that feel summery, but have a va-va-voom I want to smell like a sexy and confident woman, not like candy"[5] Minaj had all creative control behind the fragrance

Packaging and scent

The fragrance contains scents of boysenberry, lotus flower, Italian mandarin, star fruit, and vanilla[6] The bottle, designed by Lance McGregor of Paul Meyers and Friends, was revealed by Minaj through Twitter, which resembles Minaj as she appears on the cover her 2010 album Pink Friday Topnotes with fruity scents like mandarin, heart notes featuring flowerly scents, and drydown becoming musky with creamy scents. Minaj described the fragrance smelling like "angels playing".[7]

Promotion and commercial

A commercial was filmed on August 3 and August 4, 2012.[8][9] The promotional internet ad leaked online on October 27, 2012. The commercial uses Minaj's song "Whip It" as the theme song, and shows a giant Minaj dressed in a pink wig, tutu and bra, wandering through New York City As she sprays others with the fragrance, they also become giants The official fragrance commercial, released November 16, 2012 features Minaj laying in a bed of black roses. She then cuts herself by touching the thorn of a rose, and bleeds of pink blood. The roses then become pink, and so do her eyes, as her skin apparently slowly turns gold, as matching the design of her bottle The perfume bottle is then shown, with the fragrance name being whispered calmly. The commercial features her single "Freedom" Minaj held two fragrance launches at Macy's, the first on September 24, 2012 in New York City, and the second in November 29, 2012 in Sydney. To promote the fragrance Minaj appeared on many television networks to promote the release of her fragrance such as The View, Good Morning America, and 106 & Park.[10] The Pink Friday fragrance photo shoot was shot by Howard Huang.

For the United Kingdom release's of Pink Friday, Minaj released four new bottle designs on March 4, 2013, which were dressed in similar outfits Minaj herself have worn, all named under "Couture By Minaj" exclusively for Selfridges in the UK.[11][12][13]

Other products

The fragrance will also come with a hair mist, body lotion, and 2 different sizes, all prices differ depending on the package purchased. Some of the products produced were later added, or apart of a limited edition of the fragrance set, or depending on the customers preference of a gift after purchase.

Minaj also revealed, via Twitter, that there will be box sets to coincide with the fragrance[14] Minaj repackaged the perfume set and it now includes a limited Pink Friday watch.[15] Minaj released three new outfits to that will go onto the Pink Friday bottle, which will exclusively be sold at Selfridges in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2013.
