Peace Run

History
Sri Chinmoy, launched in 1987 [1][3][6] a run for international friendship, which today is called "World Harmony Run". The Liberty Torch Run, a relay to mark America's bicentennial in 1976, was the forerunner to this race.[7] The World Harmony Run was initially held every two years and then annually. The team of international runners carried a torch as a symbol of friendship. This team now includes runners from more than 100 countries.[2] The aim of the torch run is to promote understanding and the harmonious relationship between the peoples of all nations, faiths and cultures.[8] Often the runner team visit schools and the children sometimes write essays or paint pictures.[2][5] Persons like Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Carl Lewis supported the run and were previous holders of the torch.
