The Desert Star Weekly (formerly the Desert Valley Star) is a community newspaper covering local news, government, arts and entertainment in the Palm Springs area of California.
The business is located and published in Desert Hot Springs, California as a weekly newspaper.
In 2008, Dean M Gray founded The Desert Valley Star as an online newsroom. Later that year he was joined by Jackie Devereaux as editor and to create a newsprint tabloid which soon merged with the American Free Journal a newsprint tabloid published since 1989 owned by Arlette Capel. The business was located in Yucca Valley and the product circulated in the hi-desert of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Four months later Jackie Devereaux resigned due to illness. Capel remained as Art Director and Gray operated the business as publisher, editor and features writer. In 2009 the busiess relocated to Desert Hot Springs, CA. Until In 2010 they published two products. Later that year they dropped the American Free Journal brand in order to focus on one exclusive product and changed the name to the Desert Star Weekly.
In April 2013 the business was sold to Community Newspaper Group of Los Angeles and Orange County. Devereaux returned as editor. Gray left to start Desert Vortex News a non-profit newsroom dedicated to investigative reporting.
Publication details
Newspapers are distributed every Thursday. The Desert Star Weekly is a community paper. The website includes story web pages plus a page-flipper that mimics the printed product.
The Desert Star Weekly circulates in the cities and communities of Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Thousand Palms, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella and Sky Valley, Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, Landers and Lucerne Valley.
