The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a first-person shooter video game developed by Terminal Reality and published by Activision.[4] It is based on The Walking Dead television series, in contrast to the video game by Telltale Games, which is based on the comics.[5] The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct acts as a prequel to the TV Series; it is set in the Georgia countryside and focuses on Daryl and Merle Dixon as they make their way to Atlanta during the early days of the zombie apocalypse.

Gameplay

The player assumes the role of Daryl Dixon, who can either fight the walkers or stealthily sneak past them. As he travels, he meets other survivors, who can either help or leave. He will have to be cautious of how much fuel, ammo and food he has, and think very strategically of who and how many he chooses to take in to his group. When he travels, he can either choose to take the highway, and save fuel, or take the small roads, where he will be able to scavenge from small villages.

Plot

Shortly after the death of Daryl Dixon's father, in the midst of a zombie outbreak, Daryl and fellow survivor Jess escape their mountain shelter to gather supplies in the nearby town of Sedalia. During the scavenger hunt for fuel, Daryl meets Jimmy Blake, the last standing officer of Sedalia, on the top of a roof, who is requested by the officer to find radio batteries to call for help. In a nearby gas station, Daryl meets Warren Bedford at a gas station, getting fuel from Warren on the condition that he joins the group. Daryl successfully gets the fuel, and the pair escape the town with the newly acquired fuel, this time heading over to Pembertom.

Upon entering Pembertom, Jess continues to get weaker from a bite from the beginning of the game. Daryl meets deputy Lee at the campgrounds who gives Daryl a shotgun and is requested to look for a park ranger in order to get car keys to another vehicle. When looking for the ranger, Daryl comes across a radio where a girl named Elizabeth is trapped in the town of premonitory. Daryl also finds out that the ranger has turned into a zombie already. In the aftermath, Jess has already been transformed into a zombie, leaving Daryl and Warren as the only survivors.[6]

Daryl arrives at the town called Fontana looking for his brother Merle Dixon, lately he heard gun shots came out from a building, assuming that it is a unknown lunatic. The unknown shooter was later revealed to be Merle, who was trying to protect himself in the case of U.S. soldiers attempting to bring him to prison. Merle joins the group and demands to go to a bar called Jake's as their next destination. [6]

Merle said he kept something of Daryl's at Jake's bar when questioned by Daryl of the reason why Merle wants to go back to Jake's eagerly. After arriving at the area where the bar is, Merle instructed Daryl to stay by the car, which Daryl would obviously disobey and look for his brother. It was revealed that Merle went back to get revenge on the gang for selling him out, but he kept Daryl's crossbow as a payback. The gang comes back and knocks Daryl out unconscious, they took all the equipment and food from Daryl, and was left with nothing. However there is one dead gang member has Daryl's crossbow. Daryl continues looking for Merle, his gang, and Daryl's missing equipment. Later Daryl found out that Merle had gone missing while the whole gang died and got eaten by zombies.ref name="quote"/>

Daryl and survivor Anna contact her father who is a sheriff, planning on meeting at the evacuation point at Palmetto Estates. Meanwhile they arrived at Danvers for serum, Daryl fought his way through the lab and found a lady named Sheila Schneider who is one of the Archer Creek Dam team locked down in the room. Sheila told Daryl that serum is just a fairy tale, the research result has found there is no cure for the disease. Auto security goes on lock down, by solving this, Daryl told Anna to flip the switch and an alarm went off by accident. After escaping the lab, they stopped by Sherwood gathering information about the evacuation. Daryl was on the way to say goodbye to Anna and Anna's father, she left with her father at Sherwood, leaving a small red bag of supplies for Daryl before she left.[6]

Scavenging around the area Daryl finds two elderly survivors Terry Harrison and his wife who was in bad condition on the bed. He was looking for their daughters Amy and Andrea. Harrison told Daryl to find Aiden who was in charge of signaling the evacuate chopper, also he was hoping Daryl could bring him some antibiotics from the pharmacy to ease his wife's suffering. Daryl found Aiden's wife Jane Carroll who instructed Daryl looking for her husband in the mechanic shop. After retrieving the antibiotics from the pharmacy, Daryl found Aiden who twisted his ankle injuring on the roof of pharmacy. Aiden told Daryl that there is one evacuation helicopter left, and Daryl must search the mechanics shop for Aiden's bag which has the smoke pots to signal the helicopter. After returning back to Harrison, his wife has been shot by Harrison who was turning into a zombie. Harrison tells Daryl that the last evacuation site is Atlanta at Firesign Stadium.[6]

Harrison and Sheila join Daryl on the trip to the stadium, find it already full of zombies. With the aid of a returning Merle, Daryl holds off a the horde with an M2 Browning mounted on a humvee. Daryl attempts to board the helicopter after defending it, but is held back by Merle, the latter being aware that the pilot was already bitten.[6][7][8]

Development

In the game, Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker will reprise their television roles as Daryl and Merle Dixon, respectively.[9][10]

During each of the first eight episodes of the TV series' third season, three code words per episode were shown during the commercial breaks which could be entered for a limited time at amcdead.com for the Dead Giveaway / The Survive And Drive Sweepstakes. Each week a winner won the opportunity to be featured in the game. Each weekly winner's headshot will be incorporated into a fictional character in the game and used in one of eight "death vignettes."[11]

Reception

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct received negative reviews from critics. Aggregating review websites GameRankings and Metacritic gave the PlayStation 3 version 37.50% and 35/100,[12][17] the Xbox 360 version 36.69% and 32/100,[13][18] the PC version 34.43% and 39/100[14][16] and the Wii U version 30.00%.[15]

Polygon were disappointed in the game and gave it a 3 out of 10 rating, stating that: "The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is the exact sort of lazy, cheap cash-grab that gave licensed games a bad name in the first place" and compared playing the game to "listening to a roomful of barely competent musicians, each of whom is playing a completely different song. And every once in a while one kicks you in the groin. Also, you have a sunburn."[19]

The Games Cabin gave an even harsher review, stating "The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct could have been fantastic, it could have been so much more, but unfortunately it’s nothing more than a shameless cash-in on a popular license. Lacking any kind of visuals to keep you interested, a story that isn’t really a story and repetitive gameplay across repetitive locations and you’ve got yourself a stinking, steaming pile of rotting zombie crap. Once again, Activision have taken a beloved franchise and bastardised, raped and ruined it, just to make a quick buck."[20]
