The East Bay is a subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area, California, United States. It lies on the eastern shores of the San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, and includes Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

San Francisco Bay's eastern shore was once known as "Contra Costa", a name now used for and exclusively associated with Contra Costa County, which occupies the East Bay's northern half.

Transportation

Interstates 80, 580, 680, 880; California State Route 24 and California State Route 4 are the main highways of the East Bay.

Major Employers

The East Bay is a economically well-developed area offering many employment opportunities. The largest employers are:

  1. The U.S. Postal Service with around 10,000 employees
  2. Chevron Corp. with 8,730 employees
  3. The county of Constra Costa County by offering 8,416 jobs
  4. Safeway with 7,922 employees
  5. Bank of America with 7,081 employees
  6. The telecommunications conglomerate of SBC, Pacific Bell and Cingular Wireless now known as at&t with around 7,000 employees
  7. PG&E employing roughly 5,200 people
  8. Kaiser Permanente with 4,730 employees
  9. Lucky Stores with 4,631 employees
  10. Bio-Rad Laboratories with circa 4,300 employees
  11. Wells Fargo that has around 4,000 people working for them in the East Bay
  12. AT&T with another 4,000 jobs offered
  13. Mount Diablo Unified School District with 3,700 employees
  14. West Contra Costa Unified School District with 3,360 employees
  15. and John Muir Medical Center with 3,023

Other companies include Longs Drugs and Contra Costa Newspapers both of which have their headquarters in the East Bay. [1]
