Talk to me, Andy Mabbett

  • If you post a message on this page, I'll reply on this page to avoid fragmenting the discussion.
  • If I've left you a message on your talk page, I will be watching it, so please reply there rather than here (but do feel free to drop a copy of {{Talkback}} here).
  • If appropriate, I will move discussion from here to the relevant article's talk page, so that anyone interested can join in.
  • If you want to start a new discussion thread, please start it at the bottom of the page. Better still, use the "+" tab next to the "edit this page" tab, or the link at the foot of this section, either of which will do that automatically.
  • Please do not make links from within section headings.
  • Inaccessible HTML (coloured text, "small" tags", etc.) will be removed from this page on sight.
  • Please sign and date your entries by inserting four tildes (~~~~) at the end.
  • Start a new discussion.

Now fixed. Tested with GRC- NAGW and QSMM. A lot of inline documentation added. File:QSMM Exterior 2800.JPG shows it in use with new QSMM text. Do check the wording. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 22:00, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata weekly summary #54

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Dispatch lag is now down to 0 so changes should show up very quickly on the Wikipedias in watchlists and recent changes
    • wikidata.org now always redirects to www.wikidata.org. This should among other things solve the issue where people were not able to edit when on wikidata.org (bugzilla:45005)
    • Fixed weird blocked-user/protected-page handling in UI (bugzilla:45140)
    • Final meetings for the external professional review of our code and architecture. They were quite happy with the quality of the codebase and gave useful tips for improvements
    • Worked on automatic summaries for editing claims
    • Investigation of different JavaScript frameworks dealing with date and time
    • Worked on using Redis and the job queue for change notifications to clients
    • Work on the storage code for answering queries
  • Events/Press
    • GLAM-WIKI 2013
    • upcoming: office hour on IRC about sources
    • upcoming: Opensource Treffen
    • upcoming: intro to Wikidata at the British Library

Wikipedia Signpost interview

Hi, Andy -- would you be interested in taking part in an interview about the use of geocoordinates in Wikipedia for the Wikipedia Signpost? The interview page is at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom/WikiProject desk/Interviews4. We've only had two participants so far: it would be great to have a third. -- The Anome (talk) 09:58, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Citing a website

Hi Andy, if I'm using the cite web template, when adding the field Work do I need to include the fact that it's a website? So e.g. here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Porter_(poet)#cite_note-3 I am citing an article that appeared on the Guardian's website (as opposed to in the print version of the newspaper - it may of course have appeared there as well but I've found it online) so I have specified 'The Guardian website' as the Work - is this correct or should I just use 'The Guardian'.

An associated question: when citing an article such as that one, should I use the cite web, cite new or cite journal template? It seems that all three categories could be applied to articles on newspaper websites.

Thanks for you help!

No; the presence of a URL indicates that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:28, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks, will no longer do that. Any advice on my associated Q?

simontcope 15:52, 29 April 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slim cop (talkcontribs)

(talk page stalker) The Guardian being a news source, you should use {{cite news}} and it's a good idea to use |newspaper=The Guardian with that, instead of |work=The Guardian (but it's not crucial, since they are aliases). --Redrose64 (talk) 16:07, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andy, I wondering how you are doing for volunteers? I feel I should get involved because it is right on my doorstep, but I'm super busy right now and would have to make time for it. --Trappedinburnley (talk) 16:56, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GLAM pages on en

Hey Andy, there's a few of us at the GLAM boot camp session in D.C. discussing how to better organize GLAM content on en. We are looking for some feedback from UK folks on how they would like content related to UK represented/organized. We are currently working on the pages in the WP:GLAM/... path. Thoughts, The Interior (Talk) 15:02, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(driving-by) The current "front page", which I think came out of a NY boot-camp a while back, is pretty dreadful - like phoning your electricity company. There should be more information and links on the front page rather than just a button menu with 3 choices. Prominent links to the newsletter are needed. If we could all make up our mind where GLAM content lives that would be great. At the moment UK stuff is scattered over several wikis. But that won't be sorted today. I hope you've asked WierSpielCheckers, the WMUK Glam person. Best of luck! Johnbod (talk) 16:00, 27 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Audio project

Hi Andy, I read about your voice recording project some time ago. I think it's a great initiative which will add another dimension to biographical articles and would like to incorporate this into GibraltarpediA. Hopefully we can get a few Gibraltarian voice recordings in English, Spanish and maybe even Llanito... Can you point me towards the correct Commons category please? --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 11:01, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That would be good; please see Commons:Category:Voice intro project. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:11, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bach composition

Discussion about how to render scoring, I will look for your thoughts here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:13, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My comment at the top of the VIAF ID category.

Not to be offensive, but completely deleting it like that was rude. As I mentioned, in that namespace normal 'style' rules don't apply. I specifically asked people to edit it if needed, but NOT to completely delete it.

I had, as I mentioned, JUST sent VIAF a note to look at what I said. Moving or something (with a redirect) would be fine, but not completely removing it.

The specific thing I am EXPLICITLY trying to prevent, as I mentioned in my mail to VIAF, is someone trying to 'automatically' fix this possibly creating hundreds of thousands of incorrect authority control entries and links to redirects.

This would be extremely bad! Revent (talk) 20:32, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The rudeness was in your using a category page as a vehicle for your personal messages. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:46, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen suggestion and discussion of various 'autofix' ideas on at least five talk pages scattered around WP, which have included links to even more old archived talk pages where people mentioned the same thing. The idea of autofixing this repeatedly comes up all over the place, including buried in Talk pages of articles where some random 'drive-by' editor notices missing authority control metadata. Unless something about it is said here, someone trying to be helpful might accidentally break WikiPedia.
There was absolutely nothing 'personal' about what I was trying to get across. I think that's pretty clear. If you had a problem with how I said it, you could have edited it.
I am putting it there in exact compliance with what's said in the header, and WP:IAR applies to complaints about it being mentioned there. If you have a problem with something I said or how I phrased it, EDIT THE DAMN THING as I asked. Revent (talk) 20:54, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically look at WP:Don't delete the main page, please. Revent (talk) 21:00, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Repeatedly reverting me is in direct violation of WikiPedia policies, especially as you have not attempted to address my attempt to point out why mentioning it there is appropriate. This is not a 'personal' attack or anything, but you seem to be trying to start an edit war over this. The idea that my edit was not (or would not be) seen by one of the people watching that page or live edits is ridiculous. If someone else has a problem with it, they can delete it, and that would show a consensus that I am wrong. WITHOUT CONSENSUS OR DISCUSSION, THE DISPUTED CONTENT (though as an ADMIN category, it's not really content) REMAINS UNTIL THERE IS A CONSENSUS THAT IT SHOULD BE REMOVED!

The only 'justification' that you have given is 'I was rude' and 'Not here.'. You have made no attempt to do as I specifically asked and either edit it, move it, or even point out a location where it would achieve the specific goal of making sure that someone who tries to helpfully fix the problem does not break WP. I think it's important enough that SOME mention should be on the actual page, in case someone trying to autofix it doesn't notice it on the (possibly archived in the future) Talk page.

I am going to put it back, for the many reasons I have stated. As I have repeatedly said, you can feel free to edit it. If you completely delete it again, you will be in direct violation of WP:3RR, and I will report you. If you continue to have a problem with it being there, you should raise the issue on one of the Admin Noticeboards, though I doubt that is necessary, as I am sure my edit will be, or has been, noticed by many admins. Revent (talk) 21:52, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to misunderstand, or misrepresent, several Wikipedia polices. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:14, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An attempt to do anything other than violate WP:3RR (which I specifically warned you against), like actually DISCUSS THE DAMN THING WP:BRD would have been a good idea. I am not going to put it back again, but am going to address this in other ways. Revent (talk) 22:22, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Edit warring noticeboard discussion

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. The thread is User:Pigsonthewing reported by User:Revent (Result: ). Thank you.

This is redundant, since I said I would report you before your last revert, but required. —Revent (talk) 23:46, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your underhand attempt to win a content dispute by making an unwarranted and hypocritical report has been rightly rebuffed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:01, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
