Plot (summary)

The book tells the story after the Detonations; the Detonations were a series of bombs that suddenly fell down the sky and killed lots of people. Among the survivors there was Pressia Belze a young girl that was about to reach her 16th birthday, Pressia is just like any other boy or girl that survived the Detonations, her body is no longer pure, she has the head of a doll in the place that one of her hands should be; she only has that fusion, there are kids that have it a lot worse. Not everyone is fused to something, there are those who are Pure; those that didn't even notice about the Detonations because they were inside the Dome, a place that they now call their home; a place far away from all the dangers of the outside world.

Pressia lived with her only relative left, her grandfather; she didn’t know her mother or father. Life after the Detonations was difficult enough when you were an adult, but if the Detonations happened before you turned 16, the OSR (previously: Operation Save and Rescue; now: Operation Sacred Revolution) would expect you to turn in to them when you reached that age, to become part of the operation, but if you didn't join and preferred to escape they killed you or if you had a lot of fusions in your body, they would use you as a target for the kids that are being recruited. Pressia an her grandfather knew this, so they had a plan to keep Pressia safe and away from the OSR. Pressia liked to go to the market, she had to go to keep her grandfather safe, but once she turned 16 she would have to stop since the OSR would come to look for her, so one day when she was going to the market she found this boy that was crying, and the mother of the boy blamed Pressia for making him cry, the kid got so scared that he started running but out nowhere a beast came out and started chasing the boy, so Pressia felt like she needed to do something, so she ran after the boy and took him somewhere safe, a house, the beast went away and when they both noticed that, the kid bit Pressia and ran away again. Pressia got so mad for not even getting thanks that she didn't notice that someone was there too, he was Bradwell, a kid that had birds fused to his back. Bradwell helped Pressia while it was still dangerous outside, but in the time she spent with him she noticed that he knew more from the world before the Detonations than anyone; Pressia didn't have a lot of friends but it seemed that she had just made one.

One day after Pressia had already turned 16, she was sleeping, when she started to hear noises, her grandfather heard them and got awake, there was someone outside the door looking for refuge since there was a "Death Spree" (Contests where the OSR kills anything that moves), after talking for a while her grandfather noticed that if the OSR was around they would come to look for Pressia so he thought that the best thing he could do was give the signal that he and Pressia had for when the moment for her to leave came, and so he did. Pressia was afraid to leave his grandfather alone, but she knew she had to do it, so she left.

Partridge lives in the Dome, he is pure, but he's not happy. Partridge wants to know how life is outside the Dome, besides, he lost his older brother after he committed suicide, and his father, Willux, doesn't treat him like a father should treat his son, his father is actually disappointed in him because his body refuses to accept the "medicine" they give to the boys in order to make them super-soldiers. Partridge is always looking for ways to get out of the Dome so that he can go look his mother; everyone tells Partridge that his mother is dead but he doesn't believe that and he thinks that the only place where he can find her is outside the Dome. One Day when Partridge was at his room he decide it was about time to get out, so he took a backpack full of important things and climbed up the vent that leaded to the air vent outside the Dome, after a few obstacles, he made it out, but the outside world was not what he expected. After going out of the Dome and walking and trying to escape from the horrible creatures in the outside world, he founds someone after watching how that someone just saved his life, that someone is Pressia. Pressia noticed that Partridge was a Pure from the beginning and she thought that without her help he could die in seconds, besides, the rumor of a Pure walking through the streets would spread in seconds; so Partridge and Pressia became partners and she was now helping him to find his mom in the outside world, but in order to do that they need to find an address. The thing about addresses is that after the Detonations all the street names were erased and basically the streets disappeared, so Pressia thought of the only person that could know were that street used to be and where it was now, Bradwell. After a lot of persuading, Bradwell accepts to help them, and so they start their journey to find Partridge's mother. It took a while but they found the place where the house was supposed to be, but they didn't find her mother there, so they decided to rest and then in the morning, go look somewhere else. During the night they could hear the people from the OSR outside the house they were hiding, it was a Death Spree; after a few moments the noise of the OSR stopped, so Pressia thought it would be a good idea to go out and see how everything was but before she knew it, someone grabbed her by the arm and put her in the back of a truck, Bradwell and Partridge realized that Pressia was no longer with them, someone had taken her and now they have to postpone their main purpose because they have to go look for Pressia.

When Pressia opens her eyes she is in some kind of clinic, but this clinic is more cleaner than anyone she has ever seen, for one moment she thinks she is inside the Dome, when she is still recovering and trying to remember what happened, a nurse appeared and made Preassia stand up from the bed, then two bodies appear near the doors of the clinic and they lead Pressia to a room with two men inside, but as she starts two get closer she notices that it is only one man, the thing is that he has another body fused to his back. They sit Pressia on a chair and the man introduces himself, his name is El Capitan. He turns out to be real nice and on Pressia's side, so when he has to take Pressia to Ingership's house (Ingership controls the army of the Dome) he is really worried for her. When El Capitan sees Pressia again she is barely conscious, she was poisoned by some food at Ingership's house, and her wife helped Ingership to get Pressia poisoned, yet the wife told Pressia to come and save her later. Ingership had given Pressia a plan from the Dome, to bring back the Pure but with her mother alive.

Bradwell and Partridge keep on their new purpose of finding Pressia and they decide, that going to her home is the best place to look for her, but when they get there, the house is abandoned, the only thing that Bradwell could think about was that he had heard some rumors about a lady that might help them find Pressia, the only problem was that she was on the meltlands a place known for having creatures that would come from under the ground to eat anything that came near them, but that wasn't the only problem, there was also the possibility of them being attacked by the lady's protectors. They knew it was a bad idea but they still went since they really wanted to find Pressia. They went to the meltlands and when they were halfway through they were attacked by something that looked like mother with their sons fused to them, they took them to their leader, but only because a Pure was within them. Before they leave them with the leader, Bradwell asks the mothers to help him find Pressia.

Pressia went back to Bradwell's lair with El Capitan to find some more weapons for the journey, but when they were on their way back, they found a lot a monsters and horrible creatures, and once again Pressia was left unconscious. When she woke up she was surrounded by women claiming they only looked for her, not El Capitan. Later she found herself in the same place where Bradwell and Partridge were, and those women there knew where Partridge's mother was, the only thing they wanted before they let them go was a finger from the Pure, so Partridge didn't had a choice and gave up one of his fingers. After some talk later, Partridge discovers that Pressia is his half-sister, so if they find Partridge's mom, Pressia is going to find hers; but not everything was nice, ever since Pressia went to see Ingership, the Dome can see and hear everything that she does, so she is danger.

They go out to look for their mother and when they reach to the place some bodies approach them, they are the Special Forces from the Dome, but they seem to have someone with them, a human. Partridge recognizes her, it is Lyda (the only girl that was more than a friend with Partridge and was accused of helping him to escape from the Dome, she has had a long time ever since), she came with a box fro Pressia, it was the ventilator that her grandfather used to have, that could only meant that the Dome killed his grandfather. The Special Forces make Partridge and Pressia go into the small hole in the ground so that they can go look for their mom and get her back to the Dome. Once they get in and get to see their mother, she confesses that she doesn't have the medicine that the Dome wants because they are having problems with the codifications on the soldiers; but her mother wants to face Willux in person, so she decides to go out with both of them. When they are out Partridge recognizes that one of the Special Force soldier is his brother, he never died, and he had sacrificed most of him to kill all the other soldiers out there. Her mother was finally with her children, but since the Dome could see everything that Pressia could, they made Partridge's brother head explode, and with that, her mother's.

This action make everyone angry, so they decided there was only one place where this could be stopped, at Ingership's house. Once they got there, they were six soldiers already waiting for them, they entered Ingership's house and he tried to convince them to give what he wanted, but all refused, moments later his wife appears with a knife and stabs him in the back, making him scream in pain, and moments later he is dead. Partridge found a room where there was a connection with his father, it turns out his father had planned all of this, but Partridge would never allow him to get what he wanted, so he made that clear, went outside and set the house on fire.

Prologue

Everyone was outside the house but Pressia remember something beautiful she saw the lat time she was there, so she went back inside with Bradwell just behind her, they were now together and he wouldn't allow himself to loose her. Pressia got inside and grabbed what she wanted, but suddenly, out of the basement came a little black box, they thought it would be like the ones the airplanes used to have so Bradwell grabbed it and they ran outside. They were calmed and watching how the housed turned to ashes when suddenly, out of the house, one by one, lots of black boxes came crawling towards them.
