The ninth season of SpongeBob SquarePants was announced on January 3, 2011. A total of 26 episodes were produced for the season, bringing the number of episodes up to 204.[1] The season premiered with the episodes "Extreme Spots" and "Squirrel Record" on July 21, 2012. This is the first SpongeBob season to be produced and aired in 1080i high-definition.[citation needed] Production of the season began in April 2012 and is expected to wrap up production in May 2013.
