<CAROL ROSS BARNEY, FAIA>, born April 12, 1949 is a Chicago Architect. She was selected as the first woman architect to design a federal office building, ("Metropolis Magazine", Karen Steen, 2002, Page 1) as the designer of the new Oklahoma City Federal Building replacing the bombed Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Ross Barney's projects include the JRC Synagogue (LEED Platinum), James I Swenson Civil Engineering Building (LEED Gold) and the CTA Morgan Street Station.
She was awarded the Thomas Jefferson Award from the American Institute of Architects for her portfolio of architecturally distinguished public buildings. <BIOGRAPHY> Carol is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Following graduation, she served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica planning national parks. She currently teaches and advanced Design Studio and serves on the College Board of Overseers at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
<AWARDS/HONORS> The work of her firm has been recognized for design excellence including four American Institute of Architects, Institute Honor Awards for Architecture and Interior Architecture; Two, AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project Awards (http://www.aiatopten.org/); A High Commendation, from the World Architecture Festival (http://www.worldbuildingsdirectory.com/project.cfm?id=1675); the Presidential Design Award from the National Endowment for the Arts; and over 27 awards from AIA Chicago.
She is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, one of the highest honors the Institute bestows upon its members. Her drawings have been widely exhibited and collected by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Historical Society, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the National Building Museum.
