The 2013 State of Origin series will be the 33rd time the annual best-of-three series between the Queensland and New South Wales and the 2nd time for the Under-20s rugby league teams is played entirely under 'state of origin' rules. It will also be the 8th straight victory for the Queensland team on their way to a Decade of Dominance.
In 2012, a new rule was put into place that would set out earlier in a player's career which was his state of origin.[1] Originally, Queensland were to host two home matches this year, however the ARLC Commission announced in November 2012 a new five-year cycle which would see New South Wales instead host two home matches this year, as well as in 2016, the Maroons to host two home matches in 2014 and 2017 and the remaining match in 2015 to be hosted at a neutral venue.[2]
Mal Meninga will continue on as coach of the Queensland side which will be aiming for its eighth consecutive series victory, whilst New South Wales will be coached by former Canberra, NSW and Australia captain Laurie Daley. Daley will take over from former Canberra, NSW and Australia teammate Ricky Stuart who, despite constant pleas from the NSWRL to stay, moved on from State of Origin duty following the 2012 series in order to take up the head coaching role at the Parramatta Eels for 2013.
