    problem?

Hello. I think I have identified an individual who has done much harm to articles. This is the user in question - [1] . At the moment I am working on some project of mine, and I noticed that many pages that contain population data have been changed. Census data in the former yugoslavia did not have the category "bosniak". Instead it had the category muslims, which referred to muslims by nationality. I am of the opinion that a person has let their emotions run wild, and that as a result they have changed many articles. I found this accidentally, as I am working on a project. Wikipedia of course is not my main source, but I pop in on it from time to time just for very basic reference stuff. I do not have the time to go around patrolling the pages in vain. (Lilicneiu (talk) 00:05, 23 May 2013 (UTC)).[reply]

The edits in question were all carried out during a single day in November last year. The editor in question has been warned, and hasn't edited since. Other than reverting any edits that have not yet been reverted (I'll check), there seems little point in doing anything more. 00:12, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
If you see a high-scale case of vandalism, you may always report a user on the "Administrator intervention against vandalism" page--JustBerry (talk) 14:06, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can tell, neither here nor the reference desk seem the correct place to ask them, and I have already checked through the WikiProjects list without much luck. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 00:14, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Have you tried Wikipedia talk:Notability (music)? CTF83! 00:36, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried neither, but I will do so straight away. Many thanks guys. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 01:16, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem with Infobox

Another editor has twice deleted the infobox I added today to this article [2]. The other editor says the infobox is 'broken' [3]. I can't see that it is. Any help with this would be much appreciated. NinaGreen (talk) 05:10, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The "issue" parameter is printing the name of his child, unindented, on the line below the word "issue". I believe this is what the other editor is talking about. Regardless, what you should do, in as polite and friendly a manner as possible, is to ask them directly on their user talk page and wait for a response from them. There's no way anyone here can read his or her mind. If you want to know why someone does something, ask them directly. --Jayron32 05:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nobility is all about family so {{Infobox noble}} orders its fields differently from most other people infoboxes. Maybe the other editor isn't used to this and is confused because family information comes first. The infobox is coded to display issue on a new line, maybe to give room for long title and name combinations on the same line. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:32, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are a couple problems with the use of the template beyond what's present in Montfort. The spacing before and after "issue" is huge and I can't figure out why that is - it's not part of the template code AFAICT, as it's beyond that of simply having the heir appear on the next line and is much larger than appears on Montfort. Second, it doesn't actually cover what this person is known for - perhaps another template would be more appropriate, or none at all. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:03, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just now used a brand-new nobility template from the Wikipedia templates page, and the spacing after "issue" appears exactly the same. Perhaps Nikkimaria, who twice deleted the infobox claiming it was 'broken', could take that problem up at the Templates page, as it's not the individual infobox in the article I was working on which is 'broken'. If anything is 'broken', it's the template at the Wikipedia Templates page. The nobility template is appropriate because Thomas Neville was the son of Lord Abergavenny, and his wife was a daughter of Lord Dacre. Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. NinaGreen (talk) 15:46, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it does appear to be something about this specific use - the other examples of this infobox that I've looked at don't have the same spacing. Still not sure what's going on, anyone have any ideas? Nikkimaria (talk) 17:56, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be happening with the same parameter at John I, Duke of Brabant. I suspect the box code is borked in some way. - Karenjc 20:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
IT may be useful to bring this to someone's attention at WP:VPT. That board is populated by people who tend to be good at stuff like this. --Jayron32 05:35, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Cross language Infobox images?

Excluding Commons, it looks like it is not possible to use images in infoboxes from other Wikipedia languages versions. The language prefix such as :de, :it, etc. will not work Is this by design? If so why? Rixxardo (talk) 08:23, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Which image is it you need to use? If it's in an infobox then it may be copyrighted and used under a Fair Use clause, and so not on the Commons. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 08:32, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They may be like File:Kelvin bridge by RFT.png where we moved it from the German project to commons. I was amazed it was harder to find an image of one than build one and take a picture of it, which I was tempted to do. Commons may help to translate the licenses from other projects.--Canoe1967 (talk) 08:45, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For example, an image created in the Italian Wikipedia version won't be usable in the English Wikipedia version. Basically it won't be displayed in the infobox, regardless the advanced syntax. Maybe I'm mistaken? If not, what syntax should be used to display correctly an image from other language?Rixxardo (talk) 08:59, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you could use an image on another language of Wikipedia like that unless you first uploaded it to the Commons. And then if it's under Fair Use, you wouldn't be able to upload to Commons. Can you provide a link to the image in question or is this a general question on reusing images? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 09:04, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, only files on Commons or English Wikipedia can be used. The reason is that each project has its own specific standards for non-free use. For example, it:File:AS Roma Logo 2013.svg is acceptable on Italian Wikipedia, but on English Wikipedia its resolution would have to be reduced. —teb728 t c 09:11, 23 May 2013 (UTC) But now that you are autoconfirmed, you can upload it to English Wikipedia and insert it in the semiprotected A.S. Roma. —teb728 t c 09:13, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Someone has allready uploaded AS_Roma_logo_(2013).svg in the English version, however I have attempted to use this version in an Italian page (infobox section), but it won't show whatever the syntax Rixxardo (talk) 09:35, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So the image is File:AS Roma logo (2013).svg. What article though? We're slowly getting there... Jenova20 (email) 11:30, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just as you can't use the Italian version on English Wikipedia, you can't use the English version on Italian Wikipedia. The Italian version is File:AS Roma Logo 2013.svg; use that on Italian Wikipedia, and use the English version File:AS Roma logo (2013).svg on English Wikipedia. —teb728 t c 07:24, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Second opinion requested on this edit

I'm tempted to revert it, but would like a second opinion before I do.

Basically, the revision deleted a paragraph about environmental concerns on a power plant. The edit summary is blank, and it's the only edit ever from that IP address. The IP address appears to be in Utah, from either Delta (10 mi S of the power plant) or Fillmore (20 mi S of Delta). Could be someone with a WP:COI, or just a knowledgeable local.

If you look a few revisions back, I had tried to improve that paragraph, and marked some statements as needing citation, as the referenced article did not substantiate them. I wasn't really a fan of it, but I left them in because they seemed plausible.

If the edit had just been accompanied by a comment like "Just nuke the unsubstantiated statements", I probably would have acceded.

But even though the paragraph is pretty borderline for value, and I'm not sure I want to champion reintroducing it, this set off my "deleting criticism from Wikipedia" radar.

If I decide it should be reverted, I'll go and mention it to the user on their talk page, etc., but I'm currently debating whether to object at all.

Could someone take a look and advise me? (Also feel free to take action yourself if that's easier than telling me to.) Thank you!

    71.41.210.146 (talk) 08:27, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After reading the section it appears to be a general criticism tacked onto that power plant. It could do with more citations but i would support restoring it and leaving on the tags you placed for a period of time. I'd say the opposite only if the section was obvious spam or if there were a GA or FA status for the article. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 08:59, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, undone. User talk page notified with Template:Uw-vandalism1, which doesn't have the most fortunate name, but was the closest user-warning template I could find. 71.41.210.146 (talk) 11:08, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(After reading the warning) Looks okay to me! Nice work Jenova20 (email) 11:27, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Numbered list with images to its left

I put images on both sides of a numbered list in the Mishneh Torah article, but as a result the hierarchy of the list was lost. Hence, my edits were reverted. Can somebody fix the list while preserving the images? --Jonund (talk) 08:28, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting a Current Wikipage for Approval

    Dear Wikipedia,

As a group assignment, we editied the page called "Salary", we added all the citations and also added more information to the article.

How do we submit this changed page for approval, so that it doesn't say " this page has multiple errors?

    Kind Regards, Ground.meyer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ground.meyer (talkcontribs) 11:56, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It does not say "this page has multiple errors". Please read the message more carefully. Maproom (talk) 12:21, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What it said was "multiple issues". It specified two, lack of references and lack of global context. Your edits appear to me to have addressed both, so I have removed the tags. You could have removed them yourself, but I understand your caution in leaving that decision to an independent editor. Maproom (talk) 12:31, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Resolved

Is it possible to add clickable links to an image and if so, how can this be done? Note that those need to be external links. I recall having seen some maps with different clickable areas. How can I make something like that? I want to reproduce the links of File:Wikimedia logo family complete-2012.svg, because when I transclude that image here on Wikipedia, the links are gone, but I need those links on the page transcluding the image. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 12:27, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have a guess as to what may be happening. Do the google hits include something like "User:<your name>/" at the start of their title? If so, they are user sandboxes in which the article has been worked on, by an editor whose username is the same as your name (quite legitimate, if they happen to have the same name as you). If that is the case, I suggest that you drop that user a line on their talk page (User talk:<your name>) explaining the problem. If they have released the page into Wikipedia proper, or abandoned it, they can request it be deleted. But if they are still working on it, I'm not sure there's much you can do.

    Template Help

I would like to add more images to this template: Template:Infobox COA wide. Currently it only allows one image on the far right side, however I would like for the code to allow five images, with variable sizes, arranged vertically. However I would prefer it if the parameter begins with " image=" , then " image1 =" , "image size1 =" , " image =2" , "image size2 =" etc, so that articles with this template already included does not have to be changed. Thanks Sodacan (talk) 15:57, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox COA wide uses the Template:Navbox. Navbox currently does not support more than one image on the right side. However, it allows one image on both sides of the navbox. See Template:Navbox#With two images, without groups, multiple lists for an example. --Glaisher (talk) 16:16, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's common for templates to only allow one image. If you really want to display more then consider using an external program to make a composite image and upload it. For example, the infobox in London uses File:London collage.jpg. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:29, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Possible faulty move from Sandbox - do I need to do anything?

Hi, I may have caused confusion today while trying to move a page I created on my sandbox onto mainspace. Got befuddled by the options at move stage. Page is: Chapel of St Helen, Wicken Bonhunt. From Sandbox, I renamed, but clicked the topmost box that said Wikipedia, which created Wikipedia: Chapel of St Helen, Wicken Bonhunt. That looked wrong so I moved it again, so it has a double redirect in its history. Possibly it now looks to reviewers like it was created by someone else in December 2012 or I was trying to do something weird. Is there anything I need to do apart from hang my head in shame? Musselburgh Grammar School

I am the Head Teacher at this school in Scotland. I would like to amend the article on the school but anticipate in doing so that it could be perceived as a conflict of interest.

The issue is on the HMIe section. This section begins with the 1999 Care and Welfare inspection which was not flattering to the school as opposed to the 2006 HMIe report mentioned later, which was far more positive. When people look for information on the school, Wikipedia pops up as the main entry and it is damaging the school's current reputation.

There were very few Care and Welfare inspections done because they did not work and they are no longer used.

I'd like to offer up an alternative wording for this section for someone else to read and agree that it gives a more balanced account of HMIe reports.

    Ronnie Summers

You're taking the right approach. Come up with the new wording, and when it is ready, put it on the article's talk page with {{Request edit}}. Someone will see the request and make the edit or decline it with an explanation. RudolfRed (talk) 20:36, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that adding links to external webpages is encouraged when the article is enhanced by the external link. However, blogs are discouraged as external links at the ends of articles unless the blog writer is a "notable" person. I would like to add my blog page to the Wiki article about the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The blog is about my experiences on Deep Sea Drilling Project voyages as a long time employee and participant in that program. Does this connection make me "notable" enough? Also, article about the Deep Sea Drilling Project is erroneously entitled "Deep Sea Drilling Program. Correct name of the project appears in the article. I would make this edit correction but editing/changing an article title seems to take special skills. 24.149.204.120 (talk) 20:53, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it unlikely that such a link would satisfy any of the grounds mentioned in WP:EL. I don't think your summary matches any of the reasons listed in that article; the closest would be "Sites that fail to meet criteria for reliable sources yet still contain information about the subject of the article from knowledgeable sources", but the trouble with a blog is that they usually do not clearly distinguish information from opinion.
As for the title: changing a title requires a move, which I think only logged-in users can do. I would do it, but I see that there is already a redirect page Deep Sea Drilling Project (which redirects to Deep Sea Drilling Program); only an admin can move over a redirect, but now you've brought it up here, an admin will probably notice this and do it for you. --ColinFine (talk) 21:41, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually (unless they have changed things recently) a non-admin can reverse a redirect if the redirect has only one version. —teb728 t c 21:52, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to append another user to open Sockpuppet Investigation?

Hi, I recently re-opened a sockpuppet investigation here and after submitting, I discovered another account, FanforClark13, which I wanted to add to the list (even though he's blocked). I've tried to add * {{checkuser|1=FanforClark13}} under the existing user, but when I hit Preview, the user name shows up as "Example". How do I add this other sock? Thanks! Hmm, after reading your comment, I copy/pasted the text again and the preview suddenly worked, so I re-submitted it. This isn't the first time I've experienced this issue, so I wonder if it's somehow tied into the User Compare Report which generates every hour? Whatevs. In the future I'll just wait an hour if I mess up. Although I still do wonder if there isn't a quicker way to do this, like by RE-re-opening the investigation. I appreciate that you looked into it. :D Cyphoidbomb (talk) 05:30, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hiding frame around an image

    Resolved

Is there a way to hide the frame (the rectangular box) around an image when using {{Annotated image}} so that it just displays like

    -- Toshio Yamaguchi 07:36, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not using that template. The frame comes from the outer div element, which has a style specification wired to "border:solid #ccc 1px;" (solid, light gray, 1px border). But you might roll your own copy of it. —teb728 t c 08:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I pasted the markup of the template to {{Annotated image 2}} and removed the border code here. But when previewing my sandbox with Annotated image 2 instead of Annotated image, the border is still there. What else do I need to adjust in the template markup? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 08:35, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Try again. I changed it to specify border:none; —teb728 t c 08:58, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. Thanks TEB, now it's exactly as I want it. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 09:03, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Add this to the original template:

    |image-css =border:none; |image-bg-color=white; border:none;

image-css styles the outer thumb. The inner thumb doesn't have a general style parameter, but you can stuff your CSS inside a specific style parameter. --  Gadget850 talk 14:50, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to use a template cross-wiki? Is it allow? or possible?

23:44, 1 January 2025 WIT [refresh] <-- So I want to use time template to display current time in a place that when viewer visit it display realtime (not the way sympol in signature fixed time in the page once and forever). My question, can I do that?

I'm from Vietnam wikipedia, and my wiki don't provide { { t i m e } } (not include space between) (or now, or every similar time template, only local-language templates but I try all the word and doesn't work). And I try some basic way but I can't manage to figure it out myself. So I ask here in en.wiki. Thanks for reading and answering.

Example: When I'm commenting in my local Wiki yet want to link to english wiki, I can just put en:fine art (put [ [ en:fine art ] ]/[ [ mỹ thuật ] ] not [ [fine art] ] because in Vi.wiki the article "fine art" doesn't exist, only "mỹ thuật", en redirect article to en.wiki) and article linked, but doesn't work like that for en:template... that's what I asking about. vi:Mỹ_thuật

    UKURL (talk) 14:15, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

P.s. Why I can't write down a cross-wiki article link in this helpdesk?? [ [ vi:Mỹ_thuật ] ] vi:Mỹ_thuật (Ctrl+LeftClick take me to target) always refuse to display here. Only see in code/editing mode, once I save my post, it become unavailable. You can view my post in code-mode, and see it was hidden between other texts. Is there serious reason make admin make this restriction? I just put a reference article from other wiki and it hidden?! Or en.wiki provides another way to do that? UKURL (talk) 14:36, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your second question first: you can put an explicit cross-wiki link in text by preceding it with another colon, so [[:vi:Mỹ_thuật]] comes out looking like vi:Mỹ_thuật. I'm not sure about your first question, except that I'm pretty sure that you can't include material (such as templates) from one wiki to another. This is a technical limitation of the software. If you want to ask further, WP:VPT is probably the best place. --ColinFine (talk) 14:57, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, you cannot transclude or substitute templates across wikis. And for the colon stuff, see WP:Colon trick.--ukexpat (talk) 14:59, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both of you. But if I still want to use a time template in my local wiki, now how to do that? I've to create it from scratch or what? But where to read the sample of code or such for that time display function...? Maybe I just need to give up this thing. UKURL (talk) 15:20, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I believe you would have to physically copy the text template and all of the other templates that it transcludes to the other Wiki, being sure to properly attribute it per Wikipedia's license. --Jayron32 15:21, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and also make sure that any MediaWiki extensions that the templates rely upon are installed on the target wiki.--ukexpat (talk) 15:28, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, sounds not easy. I've no idea about mediawiki extensions that required on local wiki. I'm only the regular user there, and installing extensions into wiki sounds like admin activity... maybe I need to ask my local admins/staffs if I need further help. Thanks for spending time with me. U know u're late, again!

Installing extensions is something not even admins can do: it must be done by the people who maintain the software itself, and can't be done through the Wiki interface. You can however find what extensions are installed: in English Wikipedia its at Special:Version. --ColinFine (talk) 18:39, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    declined vs deleted

    TERMINOLOGY

Is "declined" only a term used for drafts, and that draft will stay available for edit indefinitely?

Is the term "deleted" only applied to formerly active articles that are no longer active?

    AVAILABILITY

Can deleted articles still be accessed by registered or non-registered users in any way?

Is there a period of time after which deleted articles can not be accessed?

Is the status of a deleted article the same as one that is still in draft?

GS Silver (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 15:26, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Declined drafts are kept for ~1 year or so after improvements have stopped, when it is considered abandoned. Deleted material may have been articles, talk pages, user pages, user talk pages, etc. Deleted articles can still be accessed by admins; for a limited time, a cached version may still be available online. Deleted material may be restored upon request, but if it contained copyright issues, it cannot. Previously deleted articles may have additional difficulties getting a subsequent article approved, it depends on the causes for deletion; drafts are usually evaluated independently, but may be compare to those higher standards. See Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion. Dru of Id (talk) 15:37, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Declined" is used in two contexts: first, when a draft article is deemed not ready to be moved to mainspace; second, when a speedy deletion or proposed deletion is contested.
"Deleted" effectively means hidden from view. The text of deleted articles can be viewed only by admins. There is no drop dead date for a deleted article.
A draft article can be viewed by anyone, a deleted article cannot, so they do not have the same status.--ukexpat (talk) 15:39, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Drafts - 2 questions

How would I find a draft by another user of an article I am interested in creating?

What is the point/significance of a draft being in "decline" status if it hasn't been submitted yet anyway? Or is is "decline" only for drafts that have already been submitted?

    GS Silver (talk) 15:53, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To find a draft, use the search function. When the results are displayed, make sure that the "Wikipedia", "Wikipedia talk", "User" and "User talk" boxes are checked, then click the "search" button again. "Declined" should only be for drafts that have already been submitted and reviewed.--ukexpat (talk) 16:03, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Something to hang a ref off of...

Let's say that I am doing the Notable people associated with Blah-blah University. The first subheader for that is the University Presidents, which thanks to Blah-blah University are all listed on one page. So I make the list, but I'm a little stuck on where to put the ref. To me, it doesn't belong in the header (I hate ==Presidents<ref>whatever</ref>==, it makes the Table of Contents look odd. OTOH, it doesn't look right to put it on one of the entries either, so I normally put in text that looks like "The Presidents of Blah-blah University were<ref>whatever</ref>" . Ideas on how this should be done?Naraht (talk) 17:06, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's in the MOS somewhere that refs should not be in headings. I would just add a line that says: "The following is a list of Presidents:..." and add the ref immediately after the colon.--ukexpat (talk) 17:16, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could also add the citation into the section as the first entry and put all other stuff below it, ie
    ==University presidents==
    <ref>A footnote</ref>
    * President X
    * President Y
    * President Z
    -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:52, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but then you have a superscript reference number dangling all by itself in whitespace which doesn't look good from a layout point of view.--ukexpat (talk) 19:14, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Try this:
    ==University presidents{{font|text=<ref>A footnote</ref>|size=14px}}==
    * President X
    * President Y
    * President Z
    -- Toshio Yamaguchi 21:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, see MOS:HEADING: Citations should not be placed within or on the same line as section and subsection headings.--ukexpat (talk) 01:25, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanx to all, ukexpat, I didn't know that there was a MOS rule, but it doesn't surprise me. I think you and I are on the same page, add a line specifying what the list is and add the ref to that.Naraht (talk) 15:17, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New editor - need help referencing source/s

    Hi all -

Stumbled upon a page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Aragones) that badly needed editing and very quickly prompted me to create an account. I made some edits, even then the article still feels unpolished. I tried adding sources, but I got an error I can't seem to resolve (after a little bit of reading):

Cite error: There are <!ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a Template:!Reflist template or a <!references /> tag (see the help page).

I read the help page, added the markup, but the issue persists. Does the markup need to be closed or something else?

    Thanks for the quick help!

Done - References should be placed after the sentence they support. I think you had one of yours at the top of the page before the "references needed" template. I also added a Reference section and the {{reflist}} tag. I'm not sure if the source you added meets Wikipedia's reliable sources standards, though. Regards. Challenge inappropriately titled & protected article?

The title of the article Environmental policy of the Harper government has no legitimate basis, as no other democratically-run national government is typically referred to by the leader's name. Would an article on Chinese or Iranian environmental policy be titled "Environmental Policy of Chairman Mao's Government" or "Environmental Policy of Ayatollah Khomeini's Government"? How do you challenge an arbitrarily admin-protected article title such as this? How do you report/challenge the status of an admin that's clearly abusing their own position by advancing such a radically partisan, anti-democratic point of view? --Emperor Zhark (talk) 22:29, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's several entirely different issues that need to be dealt with here:
    1. There's no evidence that your company has been the subject of extensive writing by disinterested third parties. Since it hasn't, it would never be the subject of a Wikipedia article anyways.
    2. If it does qualify, you should not be the one writing about it, instead it would be best if disinterested people, unconnected to your company, wrote about it under no control on your, or your company's control. That is, Wikipedia editors are encouraged to avoid editing where a conflict of interest exists, because you have an interest in seeing your company's internet presence expanded by being noted on a very popular website, and Wikipedia has an interest in seeing that its articles written in a neutral, disinterested tone, it is not a good idea to allow you to write it.
    3. No one, not the subject of the article, nor the people who write the articles, whoever they are own the text of the articles. All text at Wikipedia should, as much as practical, be open to improvement by anybody.
    4. Articles are not protected preemptively. This is because Wikipedia is designed to be as open as possible, and only when there is clear evidence that someone is actively trying to damage Wikipedia, or is otherwise causing problems that need to be stopped immediately, do we violate that basic principle.
Ada, you've been given some rather curt responses before this, but as it appears you are new to Wikipedia, I hope this longer explanation helps you understand a little bit more about how things work here. --Jayron32 01:40, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that Btgada16's request was the result, not of ignorance, but of his reasonable expectation that an article on his company will acquire an extensive "criticisms" section. The company runs penny auctions. Maproom (talk) 05:48, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Question about block messages

During a recent RfC, we were discussing whether an IP editor should be allowed to remove a message placed on his talk page with Template:School block. Another user said "block messages [that the users sees when he tries to edit a page] are entirely visible, probably more visible, to the end users in the actual block message [Template:School block]."[7] Having never been blocked, I have never seen the message that a blocked user sees when he tries to edit. Help!! I have made Edits and they got reversed.

    I edited this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firestone_Indy_Lights

To reflect a new driver champion, Peter Dempsey who won today in Indianapolis at the Indy Lights race.

An editor reversed my changes and now only the page is only current/up-to-date for last year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.191.41.124 (talk) 01:34, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reason that the edit was reverted was because it was incorrect. The person you note won a single race in the above racing series, not the entire championship for the whole year. The current season has not yet concluded, so we don't know who the champion is. You've confused the article about an entire series of races with a single race. --Jayron32 01:43, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
[After Edit conflict]...I know nothing about these races, but it might help you see what's happening if you first click on the "View history" tab at the top of the article, noting in particular the reverting editor's Edit summary, which says "...dempsey won a race, not the championship". Now, I don't know if that's a valid comment. You probably do. Your next stop might be the article's Talk page, where you could open a discussion on the matter if you think it's appropriate. HiLo48 (talk) 01:47, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As others say, you edited the wrong article. Specifically, Peter Dempsey won the Firestone Freedom 100 which is only the fourth of twelve races in the racing series Firestone Indy Lights. Dempsey's win yesterday had already been added to Firestone Freedom 100 and 2013 Indy Lights season. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:01, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

References not showing up on Books or articles rendered as PDF

When I render a book as PDF or choose “Download as PDF” from the “Print/export” drop menu on the left of an article, the PDF version does not include most references. The first example is Book:Critical Care: An Introduction this is a fairly large book so I tried the article Intensive-care unit. I next tried a draft article I am working on User:MrBill3/draft article MSS. I placed a helpme tag on my talk page. The response I recieved suggested editing the articles using the Template:Cite web and Template:Cite news. Both articles use those templates, my draft article uses both extensively. The PDF produced has [number] inline for citations but only the references which are bare urls. The intensive care unit article uses the <references /> tag and my draft article uses the {{reflist}} template. I was wondering if the citation templates or something transcluded in them has made it onto the exclude in print list.MrBill3 (talk) 04:22, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you work in your sandbox you work alone - and run the risk of the article being run through deletion processes if there are major flaws in it.
If you work at AFC you request review and get feedback from experienced editors. AFC has a specialist help desk. Articles created at AFC almost never face deletion soon after creation.
Basically if you are experienced enough to confidently create an article that complies with all the basic standards, work in your own userspace - if you're not confident of your skills, use AFC. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 06:33, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gopal Narhari Natu- Marathi Poet, India

The article is placed in sub category, without much information.

I want to draw your attention at a contradictory figure appearing on this page. It says Gopal Narhari Natu Whose penname is Lokkavi Manmohan, (1911 to 1999) where as the death window says 1991. This can be corrected.

    Second point, the poet was very prominent and persons doing work/research on Mahatma Gandhi, they are not getting any information;

    Background and Style Changing

    Dear Sir / Madam

Please accept my sincere gratitude for your efforts.

Is there any way to change white background of Wikipedia Pages to black or a gray color for better reading (for eyes) and charge saving on AMOLED mobile devices, like fast "Style Options" (that changes text and background colors proportionally) on Yahoo!?

I searched and asked it on your good live-chat help service and suggested link below: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:User_style

Thanks, it's OK, but i mean a simple and fast way for every user in any level. I wanted to suggest that but first for sureness asked it! Please if not exists, suggest it to site developers, i think it is an important thing for readers and it's necessary for reading in different situations: Day, Night, Indoor, Outdoor, Different eyes, ... apart from display contrast changing. Please dedicate a simple button for fast style changing, PLZ!

WP:Village pump (proposals) is probably the best place to make this sort of suggestion.

However, when I tried Png rendering, I got lexing errors at double quotes in math mode (e.g. Failed to parse (syntax error): {\displaystyle "Hello," \cdot "world" = "Hello, world"} ). A Question as to Whether Behavior Is Actionable

I have a question about the behavior of an editor in an article and its talk page. I won't identify the article or the editor at this time. This editor is frequently uncivil, and is frequently cautioned on his user talk page. He then blanks his user talk page with the edit summary of "revert vandalism". Is this in explicit violation of any policy or guideline? Robert McClenon (talk) 20:37, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More precisely, I know that incivility is in violation of a policy. Is the blanking of warnings on a user talk page in violation of a policy? My understanding is that, in general, the blanking of talk pages is discouraged but permitted, because archiving is preferred. Is the incorrect edit summary in violation of a policy or guideline? Robert McClenon (talk) 20:58, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

putting figure caption to the left of a figure

    Resolved

How can I annotate a figure with the caption to the left of a figure instead of below it?

I want to put a detailed description of this image to he left of it (for screen purposes).

    TCO (talk) 21:16, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if that's possible. All the expamples at WP:CAPTION and WP:PIC have the caption at the bottom. RudolfRed (talk) 21:22, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know that doing so would be advisable, but I suppose you could make a table, with the cell to the left having text and the cell to the right having the image. For example:
    <center>
    {| class="wikitable" style="width: 40%;"
    |-
    | text text text text... || [[File:Recherches sur l’isolement du fluor, Fig. 5.PNG|200px]]
    |}</center>
Which would format (with more text for illustration purposes) as:
text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text
The width parameter keeps the text from stretching the caption cell hugely. You could also add (next to the "|-") valign="bottom" to make the text appear at the bottom of the cell.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 07:10, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding photographs.

I would like to add a photograph to the entry for the British Jazz Singer Beryl Bryden. It is much better than the one on the page . It is a publicity handout given to me by Beryl in 1957. I cannot think that there is any copyright since she gave them away freely to all of her fans. I have edited the page with some additional information but I am darned if I can understand how to download and add a photo. Can you help please Diddyday (talk) 21:23, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If we know the photographer they are usually copyright until 70 years after the photographer dies. If we don't know who took the picture then it can be 120 years after date of creation. We also need to know date and countries of first publications. Being handouts then that may be considered publication in the countries they were handed out in.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:30, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't a clue who took the photo. It would have been commissioned by Beryl herself but there is no photographer's name on the photo. Where does that leave me? Beryl has been dead for years so we can't ask her! Beryl always had a handful of the photos with her and probably gave them out all over the place, not just in the UKDiddyday (talk) 21:41, 25 May 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diddyday (talkcontribs) 21:37, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The existing Beryl Bryden image may be a copyright violation as well. I put it in deletion review over at commons. If it is deleted in about 7 days then we may be able to use yours under Wikipedia:Non-free content if we can't find a free license image. I think 300px wide is max for non-free images though.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:43, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, there wasn't any sourcing for the existing text in the article. I reverted once, placing a template on the user's page explaining the need for sourcing. He very quickly re-added his content, with no sourcing and no Edit summary. I reverted again, with an explanatory Edit summary, and reinforcing the need for sourcing on the user's Talk page. Within minutes he had again re-added his content, this time with what to him must be the explanation of "Changes on History as per SRCS Admin..." I suspect he may also think that writing "The spirit is eternal; SRCS will always Do everything in love (1 Cor. 16:14)" in the article is good sourcing. I cannot and will not revert again now because of 3RR, but it seems we have a kind of incompetence on display here, rather than deliberately rule breaking behaviour.

    Sandbox Comment

Sometimes the term sandbox is used to refer to user space, but that is not really the sandbox. A user's sandbox is erased periodically. User space is permanent, like article space, and an article can be moved from user space to article space when it is ready. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:00, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid it is you who are confusing the issue. "your Sandbox" generally refers to the link "Sandbox" at top of all pages for registered users who haven't disabled Add a "Sandbox" link to the personal toolbar area at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. The "Sandbox" link is enabled by default and that sandbox is not erased periodically unless the user does something to erase it. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:13, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. What do you mean by "help spelling"? Can you be a bit more specific? We would certainly appreciate help in fixing spelling here, at Wikipedia (but only for articles; don't fix other's spelling at talk or discussion pages such as this one). Note also that we prefer no particular variety of English so we don't want corrections, for example, of U.S. English into British English or vice-versa (color vs. colour). If you're looking for help with the spelling in something you've written, you might ask at the language section of the reference desk, but please note that we don't do people's homework for them.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:30, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I partly agree and partly disagree about regional spelling. "Color" should be changed to "colour" when referring, for instance, to the colours of the flag of the United Kingdom. "Colour" should be changed to "color" when referring, for instance, to the colors of the flag of the United States. Spelling should be consistent in an article, and, if the article is about a particular Anglophone country, in the appropriate variety of English. Hi Margery, at Wikipedia we believe in being a free encyclopedia and your feedback is much appreciated. As you may know, this website is run by volunteers and we ask that you give us time to try our best to resolve this issue. In the meantime, I will personally ensure that this information will be transmitted to the relevant department. Thank You. --Ordeerligg (talk) 19:05, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could we get an admin to oversight this ladies phone nu, address and other personal information? Heiro 19:10, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an admin, but I have just telephoned Margery Ruble and she e-mailed the relevent documents to me. If an admin/or otherwise would like to contact me for the PDF files for Tony Victor please leave a messege on my talk page. --Ordeerligg (talk) 19:16, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ummm, please never ever do that again. And go read WP:CITE, WP:RELIABLE, WP:OR and WP:PRIMARY now please. Heiro 19:17, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a sanction available for this? Ordeerligg totally violated the personal privacy of the OP in addition to giving blatantly misleading information about WP rules and procedure in their post. This is really serious and needs strong action. Wow! It's an un-freaking-believable violation! Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 19:28, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Calm down Dodger, there's nothing extraordinary going on here. A person put some details on a website asking to be called, and Ordeerligg called them - to help out. It's not how we do it here, but there's no need to shout out requests for sanction. I've explained things to Ordeerligg on their talk page and Margery, if you're reading this - I'm afraid your father wouldn't be eligible to be included in List of surviving veterans of World War II, unless he is "notable" in his own right. By "notable", we mean discussed by multiple independent reliable sources. If I were you, I'd be happy he's not on Wikipedia... it's often more trouble than it's worth! WormTT(talk) 19:37, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am new to Wikipedia and I have not read those specific rules. I apoligise and I e-mailed Margery an apology aswell. Thank you Dodger and Rowe for your kind words. --Ordeerligg (talk) 19:33, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think contacting another editor who invited contact is a violation of privacy of any sort. It's irregular, but I sense a massive over-reaction here. Bretonbanquet (talk) 19:36, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Clostridium Perfringens

    Dear Wikipedia,

I hope you can review and update the information posted on the Clostridium Perfrigens description. C. perfringens is actually a gram-variable bacteria with straight rods and blunt ends occurring singly or in pairs: spores are seldom seen in a gram-stain, but if present are large and central to sub terminal, oval, and swell cell: large boxcar shapes. Reference material I used is found in Chapter 44 of Bailey & Scott's twelfth edition of Diagnostic Microbiology with key authors: Betty A Forbes, Daniel F Sahm, and Alice S. Weisfeld.

Thanks for you time and efforts!

    Most sincerely,

    Reba M Lasseur — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.173.201.46 (talk) 19:18, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is spelled Clostridium perfringens. You can edit the article if you can provide a reliable source, or can discuss on the article talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:25, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invisible template to flag for WikiProject attention?

So this may be a complex question, I hope I ask it clearly.

I am using WP:AWB to make lots of minor gnomish changes to pages within the scope of WP:FOOD. As I am doing so, I occasionally come across pages that need a fair bit of help. They may already be tagged with various issues, but as far as I can tell there isn't really a good way for me to flag these pages as being more urgently in need of attention by the WikiProject, or flagging for my own review later.

I know it would be pretty simple to create a non-displaying template that will add a category to a page. My question would be: is this okay under WP policy? Is it okay for me to create a maintenance category just for myself/the wikiproject? (e.g. Category:Food and drink articles needing urgent attention.

If the answers are Yes and No respectively, would it be okay for me to create such a template either in my userspace or in the wikiproject's space, and use 'what transcludes here' to fetch the list of flagged articles? — The Potato Hose 19:21, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can't you use the attention parameter of the project banner for this purpose? Please note, it's not that I know exactly how to do that, just that I believe it to be possible. But there's very probably someone here who does know to make it work if it isn't immediately obvious. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:13, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hah, I am a derpy potato and forgot the important bit: it's annoying as all get out to flip between article and talkpages in AWB for that purpose, so I'm looking for something I can add to the article itself, somehow. — The Potato Hose 21:17, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
These sorts of categories should not be added to the article namespace. WP:FOOD's banner already populates Category:Food and drink articles needing attention (or a subcategory of that) when the attention parameter is passed to the project's banner. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 21:24, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See above. Switching back and forth in AWB is a PITA. What about the second scenario? — The Potato Hose 21:45, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    capcia solutions for blind users?

I was trying to create an account and am unable to because of the capcia. There does not appear to be an audio version. Is there an accessible way to create accounts? 184.166.5.13 (talk) 20:48, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Who do I contact to get a status update on a New Article submission

Please tell me how to get a status update on whether a new article I submitting one week ago has been approved? Thanks. EllenSheehy (talk) 21:13, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You will be notified on your Talk page as standard procedure, you don't need to do anything extra. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 21:26, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your talk page (which hasn't been created yet) is User talk:EllenSheehy. I don't know how certain you are to be notified. It's safer to watch the submission page Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/The Word Network. As it currently says, it is waiting to be reviewed. You are allowed to edit the page further. IIVeaa aka 1Veertje removed a whole table of data

    What to do?

Suspect conflict of interest. Suspect hostile removal of data.

Objection to IIVeaa aka 1Veertje removed a whole table of data in the page of March Against Monsanto .

I spent 7 hours till 04:00 to do it and I had to sleep. And other poeople sure have also spend many good hours on top.

Does IIVeaa/1Veertje really want wikipedia work for the best of all people?

Or did IIVeaa/1Veertje just doing it for his own rules?

Does IIVeaa/1Veertje have stock or funds or interested or know anyone related to Monsanto & alike??

That article marked the event of fight against injustice establishment. Probably controversial where Monsanto-related parties GMO-related conglomerates will remove data they deem give them disadvantage.

This isn't really the place to complain about the behaviour of others. Not that it will do you any good complaining anyway. An unsourced list of participating groups 1775 words long [9] isn't even remotely acceptable as article content. This is an encyclopaedia, not a database. Find sources, and briefly summarise the material. AndyTheGrump (talk) 00:33, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Confusion in editing

I have never edited before and so I clicked REF in error when trying to correct some language and usage I found in the article about deceased Gen Dion Williams,USMC. I am tired of reading poorly written articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.211.23.217 (talk) 01:20, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have some problems with polish contributors to Wikipedia, about the book "The Pianist" published in 1998. They try to create wrong impression, that the book was written by someone else then Wladyslaw Szpilman - the author of the book, and telling us that it was only a memoir and not a book.

The best non-fiction book of the year 2000 named by many US newspapers should not be degradated to "memoir". Please refer to Wikipedia informations about this book in other languages.

Here only the link to amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/The-Pianist-Extraordinary-Survival-1939-1945/dp/0312263767/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366005008&sr=8-1&keywords=szpilman

First print of the book was elaborated by Jerzy Waldorff, as stated in every book printed also in the US by Picador/St. Martin Press.

There is also many errors in the description of the book and the plot is to long and contains many wrong informations.

But there is a group from Poland (Poland is very well known for it antisemitism) who try to destroy the image of the Jew -Wladyslaw Szpilman. It is by the way strange, when the name of the author in the text is different in the box, on the cover, in the bestselling book sold more then 5 000 000 copies worldwide, then in the text created by polish vandals. Please take a look on it. I can not fight polish antisemitism whole my life and engage in the discussions here on wikipedia.

So please correct the errors in your topic and please block it against of vandalism, as it happened to the thopic "Wladyslaw Szpilman" in Polish wikipedia. Thank you very much for your support in advance.
