Boodles British Gin is a brand of gin bottled and distributed in the United Kingdom by Proximo Spirits. It is bottled at two strengths 40% alcohol product (80proof) for the UK market and 45.2% alcohol (90.4 proof) for the USA. It has previously bottled at 47.2% alcohol (94.4 proof).[1] As of 2013 it is produced at the Greenalls Distillery, Warrington in a Carter-Head still and is bottled at Burlington, UK.

History

Boodles was named after Boodle's gentlemen's club in St. James's, London, founded in 1762 and originally run by Edward Boodle. It was reputed to be the favourite gin of the club's most famous member, Winston Churchill,[2] though the same has been claimed for Plymouth Gin.[3]

Boodles was originally bottled in the United States by Joseph E. Seagram & Sons. Distillers Corporation acquired Joseph E. Seagram & Sons in 1928, and changed its name to The Seagram Company Ltd. In 2000, Seagram's assets were later sold to companies like Pepsico, Diageo and Pernod Ricard. When Boodles was produced by Chivas Brothers for Pernod Ricard, USA it was distilled as a concentrate at Greenalls Distillery and then shipped to be mixed with neutral grains spirit, diluted with water and bottled for American consumption by Boodles British Gin Co. in Fort Smith, Arkansas[4]

At the beginning of 2012 Pernod Ricard announced their disposal of Boodles Gin to Trade Wind Brands of Proximo Spirits, New Jersey.[5] In June 2013 the first bottles of Boodles Gin were released in the UK, with a redesigned bottle and an alcoholic strength of 40% ABV. the botanical recipe fot he gin remains the same.

Flavor and evaluations

Boodles contains nine botanicals:

  • Juniper
  • Coriander Seed
  • Angelica Root
  • Angelcia Seed
  • Cassia Bark
  • Caraway Seed
  • Nutmeg
  • Rosemary
  • Sage

It is famous for having one of the more understated juniper flavors among the top gins distilled in Great Britain[citation needed]. In the 19th century, Boodles was very popular in British colonies that had tropical climates.[citation needed] It was mixed with tonic water that contained quinine as a remedy against malaria.

Wine Enthusiast, an American magazine, reviewed Boodles in 2004 and gave it a respectable score of "90-95".[6]
