Patiala House Courts Complex is one of the five District Courts complexes in the state of Delhi.[1] It is housed in former palace of the Maharaja of Patiala, is situated near India Gate in central Delhi, India. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.[2] The building has a central dome with a "butterfly" layout, similar to other Lutyen's buildings.[3]The Patiala House Court Complex is built in an area measuring 31872 Sq. Mtrs. The whole complex is divided into five parts viz. Main Building, Publication Building, Annexe Building, Lock-up Building & MEA Building. The complex consists of 32 Courts, 1 Family Court, Delhi Legal Services Authorities Office and various other branches and Lawyers Chambers.[4]

History

Patiala House was formerly the palatial residence of the Maharaja of Patiala (in Punjab). part of central vista, this building, built in the 1930s, has a central dome with a butterfly layout, similar to other buildings o the Lutyens zone. Today it houses the district Courts complex for New Delhi District. 'A double Vtoreyed building, the central portion is emphasized with a domed pavilion on the terrace and projection porchover the upper storey, there is a projecting chajja running the entire length of the old building.[5] it has seen interesting occupants ever since the Maharaja vacated it. when former PM Indira gandhi abolished the privy Purses of the erstwhile royals in 1970s, this was acquired by the Government of india. Delhi High Court was run from here earlier and rom 1978, it is the District court.[6] As the population of Delhi grew, in March 1997 Patiala House was converted to become one of three court complexes in the city, after criminal courts from Parliament Street were shifted here.[1] In 2001, 54 judges were stationed at Patiala House Courts, which have jurisdiction over the New Delhi, South Delhi and South West Delhi districts.[7]

Library

A Library is presently functional for Judicial Officers at Ground Floor of Publication Building. Judicial Officers can access all the reference Books, Journals, Bare Acts, Swamys’ Books, General books, law Journals, Law Softwares etc. Maintenance and issuance of Books, Bar Acts, Swamys’ Books, General books, law Journals, Law Softwares, Library Software. Binding of Law Journals, Purchasing of Newspapers and Magazines for the Ld. District Judge, New Delhi District.[8]
