José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior (born 25 July 1988), commonly known as Paulinho, is a Brazilian footballer who currently plays as a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur. He is well known for his extreme levels of mental toughness and also his aerial prowess.

Paulinho is a box-to-box midfielder who "is a strong and powerful runner, pushing his side forward from midfield to supplement his fine defensive work. Paulinho also offers a useful presence in set piece situations at both ends of the pitch."[2]

Career

Early career

Paulinho began his career at the youth levels of Pão de Açúcar, moving to CA Juventus shortly afterwards, where his career started to develop. At 17 years old, he was transferred to the Lithuanian side FC Vilnius in 2006, and in 2007 he was transferred to Polish side ŁKS Łódź.

Corinthians

In 2009, playing for Bragantino, he drew the attention of São Paulo giants Corinthians, and was loaned to the club, where he won important competitions such as the 2011 Brasileirão and the 2012 Copa Libertadores, cementing himself as a hero for his club.[3]

On 16 December, Paulinho and Corinthians won the FIFA Club World Cup 2012 in Yokohama as Paolo Guerrero scored the winner in 1–0 victory for the Brazilians.[4] Following a good display in the competition, he was targeted as a January target for clubs across Europe including Chelsea, Manchester City and Inter but refused the overtures, telling Esporte iG, "I'm staying at Corinthians."

Tottenham Hotspur

22nd June 17:56 Tottenham can confirm this transfer is true with Huddlestone and Gomes going the other direction plus €5.75m. He will not be training with his new fellow team mates until the cup competitions have finished. More to follow.....
