Critical reception
The film received extremely negative reviews from critics & audience, with an aggregate review score of 1/5 from "reviewbol.com"[7] Madhureeta Mukherjee of The Times of India gave the film 2.5 stars and said "This one might impress the wannabe Himmatwalas out there. But it'll take more than himmat to go back to the gawdiest era of all. Rest, as they say, is history. Repeated!"[8] Rediff gave the film 2 stars out of five stating that, "Sajid Khan loves big scale but the production values of all his film and their aesthetics are consistently tacky. Himmatwala is no different.".[9]
Taran Adarash of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 1.5 out of 5 stars stating that, "A film that promises big entertainment, Himmatwala is hugely disappointing!".[10] Shubra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film 1.5 stars and said "I expected Himmatwala to be predictable. I also expected it to be annoying, and it doesn't disappoint on both scores. But I didn't think it would be so dull. In the rest, it needs all your courage. Hai himmat?"[11] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV Movies gave the film 1.5 stars and said "Himmatwala is a mindless potpourri that brings together the worst ingredients of 1980s Hindi cinema and parlays them into a messy mélange that quivers repeatedly under its own weight."[12]
Komal Nahta rated the film 1 star out of 5 saying that "Director Sajid Khan has tried to recreate the era of the eighties but has overlooked the fact that the audience has moved decades ahead."[13] Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times rated the film 1 star commenting, "When Himmatwala ended, I felt like I had aged a few years. Honestly, you need real courage to brave this one."[14] Oneindia.com gave 1 star and wrote, "Honestly, I still can't believe that I'm in my fine senses after watching the nonsensical Himmatwala."[15] Rajeev Masand gave 1 star and commented, "It must take a special kind of skill to remake a mediocre film like 1983's Himmatwala without even marginally improving on it. Director Sajid Khan's potpourri of excessive melodrama, puerile humor, cartoonish action, and garish songs plods on for two-and-a-half hours with little concern for your bladder or your mental health. Packed from start to finish with too many underwhelming action scenes, and song sequences that pale in comparison to Jeetendra and Sridevi’s matka-jhatkas, the new Himmatwala is a busy, crowded film but one that’s deathly dull in the final reckoning."[16]
Box office
Himmatwala had an average opening within range of 50-55% primarily at single screens than multiplexes[17] where it collected around ₹10.50 crore (US$1.3 million) on its first day.[18] It had steep fall all over within range of 30% where it collected around ₹8.5 crore (US$1.0 million) on its second day.[19] It did not grow over the weekend and netted around ₹26.50 crore (US$3.2 million) because of negative reports[20] and dull response at multiplexes.[21] It had not shown improvement and had earned around ₹38 crore (US$4.6 million) in its first week.[22] It had a steep fall in its second week and netted tiny figures of around ₹4.77 crore (US$570,000) nett.[23] The movie was declared a flop by box office India.[24]
