January

  • December 21, 2008 – January 1 – According to the Department of Health, 335 people were injured due to accidents with firecrackers around the country.[1]
  • January 5 – Criminal charges were filed against the son of DAR Secretary Nasser Pangandaman and four others in connection with the mauling of Delfin dela Paz and his 14-year old son in the presence of Pangandaman himself.[2]
  • January 10– Wide areas in Southern Mindanao are cut off from electrical power after explosions blamed on the Moro Islamic Liberation Front destroy main transmission lines in Lanao del Norte [3]
  • January 12 – Four officials of the Department of Justice take a leave of absence after being implicated in a bribery scandal involving efforts to release three wealthy young men charged with drug trafficking.[4]
  • January 14 – Onetime Batangas governor Antonio Leviste, formerly married to Senator and 2004 vice-presidential candidate Loren Legarda, is found guilty of homicide by a Makati City trial court in connection with the 2007 shooting death of his long-time aide Rafael de las Alas.[5]
  • January 14 – Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Diosdado Peralta is appointed by President Arroyo as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, replacing the recently-retired Ruben Reyes.[6]

  • March 7 – The Eraserheads continue their reunion concert entitled Eraserheads Live the FINAL SET ! It was held at the SM Mall of Asia concert grounds. It was a successful concert in 2009 because they finished the show and they played 28 songs and during the 26th song(Ang Huling El Bimbo) Ely Buendia burned the piano which you can see in their 5th album cover of Sticker Happy and after that they play 3 song in a three for the road. The media hailed this event a "concert of the year".

May

  • May 22 – The 2009 flu pandemic, which was an outbreak, has entered the Philippines.

  • June 22 – First death caused by H1N1 confirmed in the Philippines and also first death in Asia.

August

  • August 8 – Typhoon Morakot, locally known as Kiko, killed dozens of people, affected over 28,000 people in the Philippines.[8]

September

  • September 6 – At least nine people have died after SuperFerry 9 sank with over 960 passengers on board sank off the coast of the Zamboanga Peninsula. Thirty more are still unaccounted for.[9]
  • September 26: Typhoon Ketsana locally known as Ondoy, caused widespread floods in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces, 25 provinces together with Metro Manila declaring a state of calamity and leaving 246 dead and 38 missing.

  • October 18 – A robbery took inside Greenbelt 5 in Makati City where 1 robber was killed during the shooting incident.

  • December 4 – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has officially placed Maguindanao province under a state of martial law.[14] The declaration, also suspended the writ of habeas corpus in the province.[15] The announcement was made days after hundreds of government troops were sent to the province, which would later raid armories of the powerful Ampatuan clan. The Ampatuan family was implicated in a gruesome massacre that saw the murder of 57 persons, including women members of the rival Mangudadatu clan, human rights lawyers, and 31 media workers, in the worst incident of political violence in the nation's history. It has also been condemned worldwide as the worst loss of life of media professionals in one day in the history of journalism.[16]
