Captain Seamus Rafter - a great leader and a great Irishman. Born in Monalee, Ballindaggin,Ireland on January 24th 1873. He launched the Gealic League in Enniscorthy and was also a member of the IRB. He was incarcerated in England following the failed 1916 Rising in Enniscorthy. Seamus Rafter died on September the 12th 1918, after been blown up while moving munitions. As a fitting tribute to a courageous soldier, he was waked in the Cathedral in Enniscorthy and, around his coffin, members of the Fianna, in uniform, formed a guard-of-honour. His commandant's uniform and sword lay on his coffin. A thousand Volunteers and the public marched in torrential rain to his last resting place in Ballindaggin Cemetery, five miles from Enniscorthy. Rafter' memory is perpetuated in Enniscorthy with a memorial in the Abbey Square. The new bridge, opened in 1991, also bears his name.
