Welcome to wikipedia! Please take a look at the Republic of Macedonia article and its associated talk page to see why we leave out the "FYRO" part.

If you haven't already done so, please carefully read the following pages:

You can sign your name with ~~~~ (or just ~~~ to leave out the date stamp). If you have questions or doubts of any sort first see the help pages, then do not hesitate to post them on the Village Pump and somebody will respond ASAP. Have fun! --Jiang 06:00, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

the UNO name is Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia! Vergina 06:04, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

The legal name of a country is the name which appears in its constitution, not the name used by the UN. The country is called the Republic of Macedonia in its constitution. That should be the usage here.

PS I was in Vergina last year and think it is one of the most evocative places in the world. I might write an article about it and the Star of Vergina issue etc. Adam 06:15, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Please stop reinserting your FYROM label in Republic of Macedonia. You need to reason and discuss on the main page. Otherwise, your edits will be constantly reverted. --Jiang 20:51, 7 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is not identical to Republic of Macedonia---------Vergina 21:33, 13 Oct 2003 (UTC)

How so? --Jiang 23:21, 13 Oct 2003 (UTC)

What IS the difference - except that greek nationalists insist on the FYO? If all you do here is adding the FYO again and again - that's pathetic. Why don't add some real contents about the greek Macedonia, the area you seem to like so much you need to make sure noone ever will confuse with the country Macedonia. andy 11:34, 14 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Changing the links does little. FYROM redirects to ROM. You're wasting your time. --Jiang

And wasting our time as well. I can only repeat: why don't you do constructive work by adding contents about your beloved Makedonia? andy 08:57, 22 Oct 2003 (UTC)

The only reason the name in the eurovision artilces is FYR of Macedonia is becaus ethats the name used in the contest. - fonzy

In addition, if you don't like Aegean Macedonia, then have that article moved. Discuss it. Simply changing it to Macedonia won't do, as that article is about the entire region and not just the part in Greece. --Jiang 22:37, 30 Oct 2003 (UTC)

In Greece called Macedonia or Makedonia, not Aegean Macedonia.

Link to Makedonia then. --Jiang 23:02, 30 Oct 2003 (UTC)

There's no point in changing Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia since the latter just redirects to the former. --Jiang 01:04, 15 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Hi there.

You might want to take a look at wikipedia:revert - you reverted Council of Europe four times yesterday, and a lot of Wikipedians take the approach that reverting the same article more than two or three times tends to be counter-productive. Martin 19:24, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)

In Council of Europe the name of the state is Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia ! Link to Republic of Macedonia is false ! Republic of Macedonia is not identical to Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia !! O.K ?? ---Vergina 22:33, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Dear Vergina, do you mind stoping with the blankings? You know that you are going to be reverted. Why dont you present your side of the issue in the apropriate talk page? All the best, Muriel Victoria 12:28, 2 Dec 2003 (UTC)

English: Hello. I am writing in Greek because I think that you come from Greece. It seems that your English is not very good, if this is wrong you can correct me. If English is a problem for you and you want to inform the other users here about your opinion, you can give me your message in Greek and I will translate it in English. I would like to inform you that a Greek Wikipedia exists at address el.wikipedia.org and you can contribute there if you like. Additionally I would like to be sure that you understand some things about the culture of Wikipedia. We discuss with the others first and then we edit a page. It's not good to edit a page when we know that another user will change it back again. Our goal is to create an encyclopedia, and in order to do that we must agree with each other on the contents (and name) of the articles. before making some change on a page, we have to think whether the change will be useful for the reader. Vandalism

I see that you've been going around Wikipedia deleting references to the Republic of Macedonia. I regard this as vandalism and have listed it on Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress. Other Wikipedians have raised this issue with you before. Don't do it again. -- ChrisO 19:03, 28 Feb 2004 (UTC)

You are nationalist! Macedonia is not identical to FYROM!!This is history vandalism .

I have corrected this and it is right in such a way! Where do you see the problem? Fixed. This was copied from its 'parent' article, and therefore the mistake was copied over. However, I am always careful to distinguish between the country and the area, especially as being British I often have to correct errors where users have confused Great Britain, the British Isles, the UK etc.
However you feel about the issue, listing these links as "vandalism" is rather immature and foolish, as firstly 'vandalism' is the wrong word entirely, and secondly it would be far more useful if you actually changed the errors you find. Grunners 19:00, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Regarding the FYROM/ROM "debate". I've requested that the name of the article debate be re-opened, but on a more general level, rather than specifically regarding FYROM. The basic policy that I feel needs to be addressed is this: Should the article on a nation/state be named based upon international recognition, or upon the name in which the nation regards itself? --Rebroad 21:52, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

If the latter is the chosen policy, then the next question that comes to mind that one must ask is: what happens if three nations all decide to call themselves the same thing? Regards, --Rebroad 21:52, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

2 OF 3 nations have a wrong name like FYROM calls itself "Republic of Macedonia" for example.

Heya, just a word of warning, you're currently on your third revert of Republic of Macedonia: Any further reverting will be a violation of the 3 Revert Rule. If you were already aware of this rule, please ignore this message. --fvw* 19:29, 2005 Jan 12 (UTC)

Not 3RR! FYROM is official name of the country!

  • See rule:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countries
See -history-:
See "Official Country Name(s)"
See "(local)" name.

Vergina 20:04, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The "Official Country Name" is what the country calls itself, not what others call it. See France, India and People's Republic of China for examples. -- ChrisO 08:48, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

ChrisO, the 3 example you just gave show that we are using the internationally recognised naming conventions for country articles, and NOT the name used internally! Therefore, article should be named FYROM, based on your last argument! --Rebroad 22:24, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Umm, no... France calls itself République française, India calls itself Bhārat Ganarājya and China calls itself Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó. The convention is to put the country's own official name in the country name box, not what others call it, hence 中华人民共和国 and Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó rather than "People's Republic of China". Do you see what I mean now? -- ChrisO 23:07, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
All other states have regular state names.FYROM is not regular!

Kosovo Campaign Medal

I noticed on User:Vergina/FYROMian History vandalism of Macedonia, that you have the Kosovo Campaign Medal listed as a vandalism article with my User name attached as an artice vandaliser. I have no idea why that would be. Its a completely NPOV article on a United States military medal, part of a much larger project to document the Awards and decorations of the United States military. Can we get this removed from your list? Thank you. -Husnock 16 Jan 2005

The article Kosovo Campaign Medal has been corrected to the proper link for the Republic of Macadonia. Please take this article off of your "list". I would also highly suggest renaming the title of that list, as it looks like you are accusing people of vandalism. You could also, of course, simply correct the links as you find them instead of having a negative sounding list of other Wikipedia users. From what I've seen on the site, I am not the first person to be somewhat offended from finding my User Name on a list of "article vandalism". Please think about it. -Husnock

Republic of Macedonia

Hi Vergina. While the EU does officially recognise the Rep of Macedonia as FYROM, it doesn't mean Wikipedia must use that name, even in EU-related articles. Of course, it's important to state that the EU only recognises that name, and that's stated both in the Republic of Macedonia article and the EU enlargement article. The only reason that the EU recognises this name is because of Greek pressure, but consider also that many EU member states recgonise the Republic under its constitutional name. Considering that the Republic of Macedonia is its own constitutional name, that's the name we should be using on Wikipedia. I know this is a big issue in Greece, but I really don't see why, and it shouldn't be carrier over to Wikipedia. Thanks, Ronline 10:53, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
