Pawan started a relationship with his co-star Renu Desai.[15] His first marriage was scrutinized by the media when Nandini filed a case against Pawan and his family seeking divorce and alimony from him on 25 June 2007. The case was investigated and in August 2008, the court granted divorce to the couple with Pawan agreeing to pay 5 crores as a one time settlement to Nandini. Soon after the divorce, on 28 January 2009, he married Renu Desai.[15] Renu Desai worked as a costume designer for most of his films. The couple has two children, a son named Akira Nandan born in 2004 and a girl named Aadhya born in 2010.

This was one of the biggest hits in the year 1999 which helped build a loyal fan base to Pawan Kalyan.[citation needed] This movie was later remade in Tamil and Kannada languages.[17] It successfully ran for 100 days in 23 centres.[citation needed] In 2000, he acted in Puri Jagannadh's first directorial venture Badri. Badri completed its 100-day run in 42 centres.[citation needed]

In 2001, Pawan Kalyan was seen in the film Kushi. The film was released on 27 April 2001 and was directed by S.J. Suryah.[citation needed] It completed 100 days in 79 centres is one of the most successful films in Pawan Kalyan's career.[citation needed][18]

2002–2007

After the release of Kushi, Pawan Kalyan took a gap of two years in his career. He went to Japan to learn Aikido.[citation needed] He learned Aikido to use in his first directorial venture Johnny.[citation needed] Johnny, written and directed by Pawan Kalyan, released on 26 April 2003. Kalyan also starred in the film, along with Renu Desai. Amidst huge expectations it bombed at box office. In 2004, his film Gudumba Shankar was released.
