Luis D. Ortiz (born November 13, 1986 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico[1]) is a licensed real estate salesperson working for Keller Williams NYC[2] specializing in the real estate market located in New York City.
Ortiz co-stars in the Bravo reality television series Million Dollar Listing New York,[3] alongside Fredrik Eklund and Ryan Serhant.[4]
Ortiz has a twin brother named Daniel. He and his twin brother left their family in Puerto Rico at the age of 16.[5] After moving to New York, he lived in a Jewish community.[5]
Ortiz attempted a career in film directing after attending the New York Film Academy and produced the short film Amalia[6] in Bolivia. He sought $15,000 from New York restaurants but raised $9,000 to fund another film. Ortiz stated that the film was titled, "The Theater of the Absurd," but he did not like it so it was never shown.[5]
Later he entered real estate where he began in rentals, performing the "bait and switch" with listings on Craigslist.[5] He has worked for David Yomtobian and Blackstone Properties before moving to Prodigy Network, where he first began doing sales, first with a $5.9 million apartment combination for a prior rental client, Goldman Sachs partner.[5] Later he moved to Synergy with President and CEO Elie Pariente where he worked with Cipriani at 55 Wall Street and the Setai on Broad Street.[5] Ortiz stated of his numerous moves, "I’ve been through a lot of companies, not because I am not a reliable person but the fact that I always reach a point where I find myself at the top of the firm but I’m still nobody. I’m not learning anymore because nobody is teaching me."[5]
Controversies
During Season 2 of Million Dollar Listing New York, Luis D. Ortiz was filmed photoshopping hardwood floors and new marble counter-tops, and stainless-steel appliances into promotional pictures of a $7 million-plus property.[7][8] Ortiz claims he did not actually use the photos for the listing but "he sent the fake photos in an email blast to top brokers."[7] The New York Post reported that the New York Department of State, which regulates the real estate brokerage industry, was investigating Ortiz. During the televised episode, as reflected in the New York Post article online video, Luis claimed that he and his twin brother learned their Photoshop skills after creating false government identifications while in college.[7] Ortiz later apologized for falling short of his believes.[9]
Luis stated of his mother, "My mother always said that is better to ask for forgiveness than permission."[10]
