Australian National Botanic Gardens opening hours

Hello,

I am writing on behalf of the Australian National Botanic Gardens about an error listed on our information that appears to the right on the google search page that links to the Wikipedia page. The information states that we are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, but in fact we are open from 8.30am - 5.00 pm every day except Christmas day.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.7.63.177 (talk) 05:06, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, there is nothing about opening hours on the Wikipedia article. So it's possible that the data was from another source. Wikipedia does not have any control over what appears at Google's Knowledge Graph. --Glaisher [talk] 05:27, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
this is the sort of information which is best on your own web site. DGG ( talk ) 17:37, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Google can be made aware of errors on the Australian National Botanic Gardens Google search page by clicking on "Feedback / More info" at the bottom of the information box and then clicking "Wrong?" for the piece of information that is wrong.--Melburnian (talk) 10:03, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of external references

I posted external links to image galleries that are on topic on several entries, from AMARG to the SS United States. I noticed recently that all of these links were removed. They were not spam, and I have noticed dozens of other articles with links to external references of other websites with image galleries. This is very frustrating and it feels that the ones I am posting are being unfairly singled out. I have read the guide on posting external links but I am not sure why some image galleries relating to subjects are deemed OK while others are not, when the content and style of delivery are very similar.

Is there someone who can explain to me why the ones I have put up are singled out for removal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abandoned america (talkcontribs) 06:44, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At Scranton Lace Company you have added a link to two small images with no explanatory text. This is well below the standard I would expect for an external link. The other two external links from that article have far more interesting and relevant content. Maproom (talk) 13:00, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After school page Neo Ttaemun-e Name change to fit?

Hello,

I am in the process of cleaning up a music groups pages to make them easier to locate for fans. There is one page Neo Ttaemun-ethat has an automatic filter, and it wont let me change the title to the english name of the song "Because of You (After School Song)" So i can make the page match the other after school pages. Please I dont understand why this filter was put, it was like someone wanted to make it impossible to fix this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clowcardruler (talkcontribs) 06:59, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't understand what problem you were having, as it moved straight away for me - it is now at Because of You (After School song) note lower case s in song. Arjayay (talk) 07:46, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am now trying to clear up the links after the move and note that in different places this is called a single, and EP and an album - can you please make this consistent? - Arjayay (talk) 07:56, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are behind-the-scenes checks in place to stop new-ish accounts moving too many pages too quickly. According to this log, that's why you couldn't move the page. You did well to post here. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:14, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Item with no article on a disambiguation page

Dear editors: Because I accepted an article about a person named Jeff Ellis at the Afc, I then had to create a disambiguation page, Jeff Ellis (disambiguation). Another editor has added an item to the page Jeff Ellis (disambiguation), referencing the name of a musician, Donald Hazelwood. There was a rather promotional half=sentence about this bowmaker in the article, referenced to his own web site. Huon removed both the sentence and the item on the disambiguation page. The same user has reverted the disambiguation edit, apparently because policy says that if another article has a redlink, then the disambiguation page can have one too. Now there is another redlink, just created, at Richard Tognetti, which also has a sentence referenced by the bowmaker's own web site. I haven't done much work with disambiguation pages, but this all seems promotional to me. Before removing both items, as Huon did, I would like some input from someone who understands disambiguation rules. —Anne Delong (talk) 08:30, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DoneDon't worry about the Disambig rules, those are all trumped by WP:NOTADVERTISING. It was promotional material, including an unreliable reference that pointed to the manufacturer's own website. Have removed them. - X201 (talk) 08:43, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Donald Hazelwood article has only three references – the first one doesn't mention him (though it mentions a quartet of the same name), and the other two don't exist. Maybe someone less busy than me can look into this? Maproom (talk) 13:07, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the dead links.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 13:32, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Albert Kitson

Hi Editors, Please alter the 4th reference for the article - Albert Kitson, 2nd Baron Airedale. The reference is from the London Gazette - Supplement (dated September 27th, 1911), page 7117, but it is the "Supplement for the Coronation of George V - a list of Peers of the Realm who paid Homage to the Sovereign at Westminster Abbey on June 22nd, 1911" I was wrong thinking that the reference was relating to the Investiture of the Prince of Wales.

Also, please get rid of the "needs additional citations etc " bit at the top of the article. I think it is a good article isn't it? Cheers and thanks Ted — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.176.153.199 (talk) 10:06, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the tag, though the second paragraph isn't explicitly sourced yet. For reference 4, I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. If you click "Edit source" at the top of the article, you will see that the reference is defined by a call to cite web with fields title, url, and so on. Try updating these to describe the new source. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:24, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

virtual librarians

The short answer is "by clicking one of the 'Edit' links and saving an edit" - getting started is as easy as that. But for a longer answer I recommend "Wikipedia:Introduction" -- John of Reading (talk) 10:42, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Main Page says "virtual librarians" about volunteers who answer questions at Wikipedia:Reference desk. If that's what you have in mind then see also Wikipedia:Reference desk/Guidelines. There is no application process. Just click the "[edit source]" link to the right of a question heading to add an answer. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:19, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Let us answer the question - No, there is no way you can pay to control information in Wikipedia.
Assuming you are referring to the conviction of Mike Bronzoulis, this seems well sourced, so why are you describing it as "inaccurate"? - Arjayay (talk) 16:41, 5 August 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Removing user sandbox from top of page

Hey there! I was trying to remove/edit user sandbox from the top of my page and I am unable to. Could you give me a heads up on how to do this?

Thanks LtdMcw (talk) 15:29, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An IP user seems to have removed it in this edit, but it is not clear why you wanted to remove it. That template reminds you and everyone else that it is a user sandbox, and gives you the link to click when you wish to submit it for review to turn it into a real Wikipedia article.

Why

Hi

On your page sex shop about 3/4 down the page it says online retailers. It mentions a few web sites and a very popular English one. I thought I would add ours and link it to our page on your site as it tells people about us. As I have read you can do so as everyone else has. So I created an account done everything properly this time as I bothered reading your guidelines. My account now does not exist? and I had a warning I cant do what other people have done? Why is this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.8.0.163 (talk) 17:20, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, those examples were not added by the owners of those websites, but by uninvolved editors. Also, your shop does not have a Wikipedia article, correct? It should only go on that page if it has its own article, and probably not even then. Howicus (talk) 17:28, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your quick response. No our shop does not have a Wikipedia article and as far as I can see nor has the other company. Their company name links to them to their info what does it matter if I want to put our name in and link it to our page? it was on your site telling people about ourselves. Thought that was the idea (giving people information). So I take it our account has been deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.8.0.163 (talk) 17:55, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Wikipedia has all kinds of policies regarding what can have a Wikipedia article. Every Wikipedia article needs significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. I'm not sure about your account, I do know that user accounts are never deleted from Wikipedia. What was your username? Howicus (talk) 18:00, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK we will get coverage in reliable sources and see what happens in the future. Oh sorry account still exists. Bad typing on my behalf. Thanks. Peace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.8.0.163 (talk) 18:19, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pleaee read WP:LINKSPAM. Wikipedia is not here to promote your online business, and it is not a collection of links. The argument that other links exist cannot be used to justify the addition of new ones that breach policy on promotion. - Karenjc 08:23, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What is a U. S. Marine Brigade by Sam Savage

I was a united states marine form 1957 to 1960. I was looking for some information about one of the units I was in and didn't make much head way. I assume that was because no one has taken the time to give you this information. The subject matter I was looking for was about the number of pilots in a U. S. Marine Air Group. I looked at several pages of Wikipedia information and did not get the answer to my question. I also found that the information on the the Marine units I was looking at was pretty skimpy. The first question I asked was what was the First Marine Brigade, your answer was something like "a Brigade is a Military unit made up of two or more smaller units". The correct answer is; The First Marine Brigade of the 1950s and '60s was a Marine Air Group (in this case MAG 13) which was made up of some fixed wing ground attack and some rotory wing transport air craft combined with a reinforced infantry regiment (The Fourth Marine Regiment in this case.) The reinforcement consisted of an Ontos battalion (see below), an amtrak (Landing Vehicle Track) company, a force recon company and some even smaller attached units. The Ontos was a light tracked vehicle with six 106MM recoiless rifles mounted on a small turret on top of it. It was originally designed as a semi high rate of fire anti-tank weapon but was soon found to be an efficient anti-bunker and with white-phosphorus rounds a terrable anti perssonel weapon. I was a squad leader in the 106MM recoiless rifle platoon, first battalion, 4th Marines. I had one 106 R/R mounted on a jeep. The amtrak was an lightly armored amphibious tracked vehicle used basiclly by the Marine Corps to transport troops from LSTs and troop transports to the shore when assaultting a beech. Having tracks it could take the troops up to the tree line and/or dunes before unloading them, giving them a better chance at survival than a landing craft. their biggest draw-back was their slow rate of travel in water and on land. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.214.101.222 (talk) 22:36, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NOR/CITE/MOS in the context of external links - suggestions of best page to post this question at?

In the external links section of an article, we list select useful external links, and often we annotate, classify or explain what they link to, for the reader. This can be anything from a bare link to a somewhat informal description of the resource linked to (if it would help, especially on technical subjects).

None of our policies or guidelines seem to say much about this annotation in the context of external links. In a case that has my attention, some description of an external link was removed. The link itself is fine. The comment was informal, so a reader could know what sort of level and coverage the link was pitched at (in a highly technical subject). The removal was essentially stated to be because that information was an editor's personal description of linked resource, rather than (say) a cite from a reliable source. The only direct guidance seems to be WP:MOSACCESS: a "good" link description matters "especially for ELs". Other pages seem silent.

I'd like to get this area a bit clarified (minor clarification) in MOS or policies/guidelines. But what's the best discussion place -- WT:EL? WT:CITE/WT:NOR? WP:MOSLINK (MOS/links)? WP:MOSACCESS (MOS accessibility)? Links/cite/OR/MOS noticeboards?

So I'm asking for a bit of input here, about which venue might be most appropriate for good discussion on this question. FT2 (Talk | email) 00:51, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think a post at the policy section of village pump, with a referential link at WT:EL (i.e. ==Same title as you used at VP== "See discussion related to this page at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Section name.", would work well. On the substance of the underlying issue, there's just a tidbit of instruction at Wikipedia:External links#External links section. Maybe you should talk about renaming, clarifying and expanding that section? I note that the two examples given there of good link names are very poor and uninformative. Email erasure

When I was at WP:REFUND asking for a copy of a deleted article (Bioscale), I stupidly supplied an email address. Now the search engines have got a hold of it. Is there any way to at least permanently remove it from Wikipedia's archives? 70.79.73.253 (talk) 13:44, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As a starting point I've redacted your address from the current version of WP:REFUND. For any more permanent removal you would need Wikipedia:Oversight, but you would need to convince an oversighter of the need for that. In either case it's up to the search engine as to how quickly it would catch up with the removal from Wikipedia, so the oversight might not be of any significant advantage. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:05, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(Similar to the <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.freefind.com"> HTML formatting) --92.26.115.243 (talk) 14:49, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is not possible in wikimarkup. See Help:Link#External links. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:05, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your prompt and precise answer, Jens.

It may be dependent on which browser you use but for yourself (rather than for everyone who clicks the link) you may be able to get the effect by holding down CRTL/Shift while clicking on the link. (On my browser ctrl by itself cause it to open in a new window but not make that the current window.) RJFJR (talk) 15:52, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

unable to remove irrelevant superman statement through editor

On the page titled Total Internal Reflection, the first sentence is about Superman hugging Mark Zuckerberg. I was unable to see the sentence for removal in either editing option. I'm not sure if it is through the actual code which renders the page, or something else — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.237.28.61 (talk) 15:49, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's already been fixed. It may be that when viewing it you saw a cached version but when you went to edit it you saw the latest version where it was already fixed. Thank you for trying to fix it. (If you still see the message you may need to clear your browser's cache; my previous comments were about Wikipedia's server caches.) RJFJR (talk) 15:54, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The page history [4] shows it had already been removed in the page source. I also saw it in the rendered page. I have purged the page to fix it. This is sometimes necessary to reflect the latest changes. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:56, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tracking changes

Not a newbie question! Telangana is linked to by well over 500 articles, excluding transclusions, non-article space etc. There has recently been an announcement of a proposal for this region of India to become a state, mainly carved out from Andhra Pradesh. It hasn't happened, it won't happen for at least a few months and it may not happen at all. However, the Telangana separatist movement has been vociferous for decades now and it is reflected on Wikipedia - we are already seeing people trying to change geographic articles (which form the bulk of the links) so that they show Telangana as the state rather than Andhra. I've just asked for pending changes to be applied on Warangal, which is one of the affected articles, but applying them to over 500 is going to be problematic. Equally, trawling through that number of links every few days will be a nightmare but given the strength of feeling for the movement, there may be a need to do so.

So, to the question. Is there any mechanism for monitoring recent changes or whatever for changes of Andhra Pradesh to Telangana ? If we can catch the links being changed and review the reason, then that should keep a reasonable check on things even though the odd one might slip through the net. This query might be better asked at WP:VPT but that place can be a bit of a hothouse and I don't want to risk getting my head chewed off unless I have to. - Sitush (talk) 17:04, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can think of two possible ways, neither are really perfect. The first would be to use the related changes linked to option, and review changes to every page with a link to the new target. The other, would be to request an edit filter to track the change without action, and you could then review the list of filter hits. Wouldn't surprise me if there is a better way, but that is all I can think of. Monty845 17:09, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. I've never even seen a filter results page and have no idea what the potential may be for that. I did take a look at your link and, as you say, it is not perfect. It is, however, a lot better than clicking through 500+ histories! Thanks for the suggestions. - Sitush (talk) 18:02, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to explore the edit filter possibilities start at Wikipedia:Edit filter. I'm not sure it would get approved, but I believe it would be technically feasible to do. Monty845 20:15, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I remove "This biographical article needs additional citations for verification." banner?

I've located the area that needed additional citations and removed the sentence, how do I go about getting rid of the "This biographical article needs additional citations for verification." banner atop the biographical page?

Trying to update information on agency page

I am trying to update the information on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) page, with no luck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Agriculture,_Fisheries_and_Forestry_(Australia)

This page has reference to out of date information, including:

- DAFF Biosecurity no longer exists, it is now just known as DAFF (see second paragraph on this page http://www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity and additional information here http://www.daff.gov.au/about/annualreport/2011-12/part-2/our-stakeholders - 5th paragraph).

- Andrew Metcalfe is now Secretary - not Conall O'Connell(http://www.daff.gov.au/about/contactus/secretary/bio)

- Rhonda Dickson no longer works for DAFF. Mark Tucker is now Deputy Secretary (http://www.daff.gov.au/about/contactus/org-structure2)

I have tried to update the content on this page and was told that I could not, for some reason. When trying to updat the content, I simply selected edit on the page and added the new text. The message I got back said that I could not update the page.

A simple explanation on how I can update the information on this page would be appreciated.

Thanks

According to the page history, some of the edits were reverted because you did not explain them with an edit summary. Others apparently were text copied from somewhere else which is not allowed. You've posted on the article's talk page, which is the right next step. Your requested text seems overly promotional in tone and not written in a neutral way. You should rework it so that it reads more like an encyclopedia article and less like a brochure. Also, if you are associated with the DAFF, you should ask for help with your edits by placing edit request on the article's talk page when you have the text ready to go. RudolfRed (talk) 06:29, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You made several edits to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Australia) article, without leaving any explanation of why you had made them. They included deletion of content. They were then reverted by another editor. I recommend you to:
• Register an account with Wikipedia. This will allow other editors to identify your edits.
• Leave a brief "Edit summary" whenever you make an edit.
• Do not delete content without explaining why you consider it wrong or irrelevant.
• If possible, supply citations for the material that you add.

On looking again at your first edit I see that there was some confusion in that you used the <ref name = ...> construct, but the name you chose was one which had already been used in the article, so I've removed your reuse of that name. A reference doesn't need to be named unless you wish to define it once and then use it in more than one place in the article. For that reason the previous instance of that ref name didn't actually need to be named. This aspect is explained in more detail in Wikipedia:Naming references for beginners. - David Biddulph (talk) 07:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Sound Synthesis redirected?

Sound Synthesis redirects to Synthesizer. "Sound Synthesis" is clearly not the same thing as Synthesizer yet the redirect exists. Is there a reason why? I've read the FAQ but I don't see anything that applies to this situation. Would it be inappropriate to replace the redirect with a proper "Sound Synthesis" article? I haven't written a replacement article yet but would like to start working on one.

Here are a couple of references to show that "Sound Synthesis" is clearly not the same thing as a "synthesizer". Sound Synthesis stub

Vam drainpipe (talk) 10:36, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's absolutely no reason not to do that, although maybe you should check with yourself first that you have content in mind that will not just be about how a synthesizer works. Formerip (talk) 10:38, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The page started out as a redirect then was changed into an article and then back to a redirect. The last time it was an article is here. You might ask @Redheylin: why they converted it from an article to a redirect. GB fan 10:44, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I can't immediately see the need for a new article. In your stub you list a number of different methods, and there is a very similar list of techniques in the second paragraph of the lede of the existing article. It isn't clear what the difference in scope between old & new articles is intended to be, and I would have thought that it might be better to try to improve the existing article rather than writing a further article in parallel. You have done the right thing by raising the question in the talk page of the article, and hopefully the discussion can continue there. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:49, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are some overlaps in the material because they are closely related subjects. In my mind "Sound Synthesis" should be board article about the theory and history of "sound synthesis". There is only one theory of "subtractive synthesis". In contrast, a synthesizer is a tool. It is a specific implementation of "sound synthesis" ideas that can be used to create sound. There are many different synthesizers that implement "subtractive synthesis". The synthesizer page should give a board overview of the history of synthesizers (ie the tools). Vam drainpipe (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The current "synthesizer" and old "sound synthsis" articles are very low quality. I think that is in part because both pages because there has been a blurring of these subject boundaries. In my opinion both pages contain material that is off-topic for the page. Vam drainpipe (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fake article

Dear editors: On this notice board Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion#August 6, 2013, a user page is being nominated for deletion as a WP:FAKEARTICLE. It was created two days ago. Don't we encourage users to work on articles on their own user or sandbox pages before adding them to the encyclopedia or submitting them for review at Afc? I have unfinished articles in my userspace much older than this one; can someone give me some guidance about what is inappropriate about the particular article under discussion? —Anne Delong (talk) 12:19, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The real problem that I see is that the article is in the primary user page, not a subpage in user space. It is as if you, Anne Delong, had written an autobiography and put it on your user page in the form of a real Wikipedia article. This also raises the question of the account name of the editor, which is that of the group, and account names should be names or pseudonyms of people, not of organizations. I think that the problem isn't that just that it is a draft in user space on a subpage, which is permitted, but that it is a draft on a primary user page. It's a subtle rule, but I think that the nomination here is correct. I have occasionally seen the same problem before, a (promotional) biographical article on a primary user page. In this case, the difference is that it isn't a biography of a living person, but an article about a group of living people.

In India Caste system is based on the Ancient Profession of Ancient Indian Families.

Ancient Professional Skills are passed down to their own Children to maintain the secrecy or confidence of their Family Profession and protect the skill set and hence the Caste System came into Existence in INDIA.

Nadars are Landlords.

They own large swathes of Agricultural Lands, Gardens and Farm Houses. Nadars hired laborers belonging to other communities to work in the Agricultural Lands owned by them. Nadars also sometimes Leased their Lands for Agricultural Purposes to other people belonging to same Nadar Community.

However, Some People belonging to Nadar Community haven't owned any Land. Such Nadars, migrated to other places as Merchants or traveled far west to Persia (Ancient Middle-east) to seek their fortune.

But,

Shanars (Chanars) are Blacksmiths.

They make Iron Tools for Household as well as for Agricultural purposes and also provide Services for maintenance of these tools like repairing and sharpening of these Tools. Most of them in this Shanar(Chanar) community were very poor that they even worked odd jobs which involves in working with these tools in Farm Houses owned by rich Nadar Community Land Lords also called Zamindars.

Sickle Users of Shanar (Chanar) community worked as Climbers or Reapers in Palmyra and Coconut tree farms. Plough Users of Shanar (Chanar) community worked in the paddy fields and farm houses. While other members of Shanar (Chanar) community provided Tool Maintenance Services like Sharpening of Knives and other Sharp Tools made by the Shanar (Chanar) Blacksmith Community. Some of the members of Shanar (chanar) Community even associated themselves with the Warrior Tribes (Kshatriya)

Shanars(Chanars) also worked as laborers in the Agricultural Lands, Farm Houses and Paddy Fields owned by the Nadars.

The Travancore Kingdom

Politically, Both of these Tamil speaking Communities were suppressed and treated as Slaves by the Malayalam speaking Travancore Kingdom and its Malayalam People. Although there were exceptions where the rich Nadar community people were given some relaxations by the Travancore Kingdom. Problem with wysiwyg redactor

Problem with wysiwyg redactor ( http://ckeditor.com/download или http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WYSIWYG ). Everything is working perfect! But recently i have found a bug when using tags, for example i place a tag on the page <categorytree mode=pages>123</categorytree> after saving i open the redactor and instead of line <categorytree mode=pages>123</categorytree> i see <parsererror style="display: block; white-space: pre; border: 2px solid #c77; padding: 0 1em 0 1em; margin: 1em; background-color: #fdd; color: black"> === This page contains the following errors: === <div style="font-family:monospace;font-size:12px">error on line 1 at column 67: attributes construct error </div> === Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error. === </parsererror>

What should i do so the redactor does not do such replace. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.72.183.188 (talkcontribs) 15:56, 7 August 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

What is this code?

The Coalition for Marriage article is usually edited rarely, yet is now attracting multiple edits a day from new editors. This i find strange already, but what is this code that keeps being readded by a different user each time and what does it do? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 19:15, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Jenova20: Maybe Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback/Archive 2013 07#myEventWatcherDiv? It seems filter 345 catches that. (I even triggered the filter trying to save this.) ~HueSatLum 19:39, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If i've read that properly then it appears to be nothing serious. Thanks for the reply Jenova20 (email) 19:50, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Magic Words or Other Options to Generate Username

Hello, everyone! I think that this is a long shot, but is there a way to pull the user's name for an inputbox. Example: User:Jackson_Peebles/Adoption/Lesson_1 has an input box at the bottom. Right now, it requires users to manually put their username into the input box, but you'd be amazed how hard some new users find this (no offense to them, they're learning) without including parentheses or quotes or something. So, I'd like the input box to come preloaded with User:Jackson Peebles/Adoption/Jackson Peebles Exam 1 rather than User:Jackson Peebles/Adoption/(YOURUSERNAME) Exam 1 (assuming the person using the page was me; otherwise, I'd want it to be the person using the page.

I've thought of using a version of the signature, but that won't work because of the variation of signatures and talk link AND I can't get it to parse correctly (it always includes my signature from the time I created the preload page). I've thought of using the magic word for the last revision user, but that's alway me, as the lesson pages are all in my userspace. This is actually quite relevant to some grantwork going on at MW; I may be looking at moving a course to WP space, but this is (one of many) complications. Any help? Is there a magic word I'm missing? Thanks! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 20:06, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was for a long time a bug that allowed a magicword to pull the username of the person viewing a page, and use it in such a way. Unfortunately, the bug was fixed, and now the magic word only works when an edit is submitted. For WP:ACE what we do is have a candidate create their main candidate page using a first input box, that then creates the proper input boxes for later use, see Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2010/Candidates/Preloader. Unfortunately, this still requires entering a username the first time. If you do find a way that doesn't involve the editor making an edit first, I'd be very interested to see it. Monty845 20:14, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, may have more luck at WP:VPT. Monty845 21:26, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

footnotes- moving the long ones to the section end

background- There is a readability problem (when editing a source or in a Diff page) with a long (explanatory) footnote (with quotation).

I tried to improve it, in this test section. I have moved the long footnote to the section end, and used only shortened (repeated) footnotes inline. It appears fine, but there is an accumulation of footnotes marks immediately after the section last word.

questions:

1. is it possible to hide those marks?
2. Is there an alternative method ? (for using long footnotes without the source readability problem ? Ykantor (talk) 21:23, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Try WP:List-defined references. That lets you put long footnotes down at the bottom of the page, and lkeep only up in the text. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:14, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template loop warnings

What's wrong with the redirect code template on Inflation theory? nick is the code in question, but I couldn't find anything in the documentation explaining what not to do. Nyttend (talk) 21:52, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just picking random ones at the category, it looks like it also puts them into the category "Redirects for Discussion". I think this is a problem with the paramaters, but I can't see where looking at the code of what redr redirects to... User:Technical 13 comes to mind as someone who may know. ~Charmlet -talk- 22:04, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's due to Template:R related being nominated for deletion. I fixed Inflation theory in [7] but a general fix is needed to remove a lot of other redirects from Category:Template loop warnings. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:28, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An article that I created a few months ago, Vienna Document, was recently reviewed. The reviewer inserted a template stating the article contained bare URLs and so was subject to WP:Link rot. The template is

.

After reading the instructions on the reflink tool, I went to the article and clicked on the link to run the tool. The tool said that it did not make any corrections. Does that mean that the template was placed by the reviewer by mistake? Should I go ahead and remove the template? Would it be a good idea to discuss on the reviewer's talk page first? Robert McClenon (talk) 01:24, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My suggestion is try to add as much information into the refs as possible using the reftoolbar. Then remove the notice.

The thing that needs to be asked is this - "if the link suddenly changes with no redirect and no easy way to find it, can I be certain that someone has as much information as possible so as to be able to find it again elsewhere?" In this case, usually author, date published, date accessed, organization publishing, etc. are all good things to include. ~Charmlet -talk- 01:27, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I restored it for you. I had to go into the "view history" tab, find the revision just before the infobox was removed, edit that version to copy the infobox, and then re-add it. Howicus (talk) 03:12, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An article that I created, Ontario Genealogical Society, has been tagged as having a bad reference format. I don't see anything wrong, and a note on the talk page brought no response. The references look fine to me, better than a lot of article that I read. I checked the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers, and the date format that I chose is an acceptable one. I created a page for the band Seventeen but it got deleted? It is a band under Pledis Entertainment (Company that created After School, NU’EST, Hello Venus etc.) and it is quite popular (it has its own TV show etc.) The other groups under this company can have a wiki page why can't Seventeen? This page was deleted because "No explanation of significance". Also there is a chinese wiki page for this band so why can't I make an english page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SmileBlueJay97 (talkcontribs) 12:10, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese Wikipedia and English Wikipedia have different rules. English Wikipedia requires that an article must demonstrate its subject's notability. Being published under a label that also has notable artists does not itself confer notability. Incidentally, the Pledis Entertainment article itself deserves to be deleted. Please help !! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Satish Kapoor (talkcontribs) 12:25, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"undo" doesn't remove anything from the page history. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:30, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify what PrimeHunter said, "undo" will add a further revision to the page, reversing the edit you wanted to undo. The revision history will show the original edit and then a further edit for the reversal. In order to remove edits from the revision history, you would need to satisfy the strict requirements of WP:REVDEL or of WP:Oversight. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:41, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has no article titled Maged khoury. User:Arab11112 has created an article in his personal sandbox, titled Maged El-Khoury. As it stands, it is badly written and unreferenced, and so would not be accepted as a Wikipedia article. But that is no reason to delete it from his sandbox. However, I suspect that it is also libellous, which I believe is grounds to delete it. I hope a more experienced editor can advise. Maproom (talk) 21:08, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I recently came across the article Bury Jack, about a recently[3] invented card game. It is clearly not notable. I have read the conditions for speedy deletion, and I don't think any of them applies. The closest I can find to an appropriate tag is No sources; but if I use this, it will advise the article's creator to find references, which would be absurd and a waste of his time (and hypocritical of me, when I know it would be asking the impossible).
