John F. Barros is the Executive Director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative[1], a Boston School Committee Member, a Restaurant Owner and 2013 Candidate for Mayor of Boston.
Early Life and Education
John Barros is the son of immigrant parents from the Cape Verde Islands.[2] His father moved to Cape Code in the 1950's in order to work in the cranberry bogs.[3] John's parents raised him in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury where he attended public school until his mid teens[4]. John then entered Boston College High school, excelling academically from which he was accepted to attend the Ivy League institution, Dartmouth College in Hanover New Hampshire. At Dartmouth, John majored in Economics and African and African American studies. John attained leadership roles on campus as president of the African-American Society and as a member of the Senior Honor Society, Casque and Gauntlet (C&G).[5][6] Alumni of C&G Senior Honor Society include US Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, Author and Illustrator Theodore Geisel (Dr. Suess), Political Economist Robert Reich, former Dartmouth College President David T. McLaughlin[7]. He was noted by professor for using his positions of leaderships on campus to advocate for social change. [8] Both John and his wife, class of 2000, attended Dartmouth and they have remained contributors to the Alumni scholarship fund.[9][10] John later went on to receive his Masters in Public Policy at Tufts University.
Career
Upon graduating, John entered an executive training program with the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies in New York City. [11] In his 7 years as an underwriter he participated in dot.com syndications with several startups including Priceline.com. In 1999 John returned to Boston to assume the role of Executive Director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, an organization that he has been a part of since the age of 14.
Candidate for Mayor of Boston
In April of 2013 John Barros announced his intention to run for Mayor of the City Boston.[12][13]
