Template:Spanish name Lucas Ariel Ocampos[1] (born 11 July 1994 in Quilmes, Buenos Aires) is an Argentine footballer who plays for Monaco as a Winger. In 2011, he played his first match for River Plate at the age of 17 years, two months and five days. In January 2012, Ocampos was named in FIFA's 13 Players to watch in 2012.[2]
Career
Ocampos began playing football in Quilmes, at age of six, where he first played as a striker. After participating the Youth America's Cup, Ocampos was then signed for River Plate[3]
River Plate
His first team debut was on 16 August 2011 in a match played against Chacarita Juniors. His debut showed great maturity and character despite the turmoil at the recently relegated club.
His debut goal for River Plate came in his second match on 20 August 2011 against Independiente Rivadavia.[4] He has since scored three more goals, against Desamparados, Atlanta and Brown de Puerto Madryn. At River Plate, Ocampos soon find himself establishing himself in the starting eleven.
On 12 February 2012, he scored his fifth goal for River Plate with a stunning shot to the top right corner of the goal against Chacarita Juniors.[5] In the 2011–2012 season, Ocampos would score seven goals and providing five assists in thirty-eight games as the club was promoted back to Primera división after a one-year absent. In a new season, Ocampos made his last appearance for the club in an Argentine Primera División season, as River Plate lose their first game, since returning, 2–1 against Club Atlético Belgrano.
Ocampos ability at River Plate caught the eye of many European clubs, but Ocampos, whose idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, still needed to develop further according to his coach Matias Almeyda. While at River Plate, Ocampos caught the attention of many clubs, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich among others. In the summer of 2012 he chose AS Monaco as his European destination as he beleived he would play and develop more there
Monaco
On 6 August 2012, Ocampos move to Europe by joining French side Monaco, who were in Ligue 2 at the time , with a reported fee worth about €11 million, with Monaco brought 50% of his rights.[6] After the move, Ocampos says he believes he made a good decision to join Monaco; and that he faced no pressure with his price tag.[7] Ocampos had to wait for his debut on 31 August 2012, coming on as a substitute for Emir Bajrami, in 2–1 loss against Le Havre, giving Monaco their first loss of the season. In the third round of Coupe de la Ligue, Ocampos scored his first, in cup competition, as Monaco beat Valenciennes 4–2;[8] Four months later on 18 January 2013, Ocampos scored his first league goal and set up a goal for Gary Kagelmacher in a 2–0 win over Istres.
Style of Play
Ocampos is known for his powerful pace and accurate dribbling when running. He is also blessed with great technique and has a strong shot with both feet. He has good heading accuracy and his height makes him a constant aerial threat in the box.[9]
