Professor Zurab Papaskiri

Zurab Papaskiri (b. September 15, 1950) is a Georgian historian and public figure, Academician of the Abkhazian Regional Academy of Sciences (1997), Doctor of Historical Sciences (1991), Professor (1992), owner of the State Prize of Giorgi Shervashidze (1998).

Papaskiri was born in 1950 in Sokhumi. He graduated from the Faculty of History of the Tbilisi State University (1972). 1972-1975 Post-Graduate Student of the Moscow State University. In 1978 Papaskiri received a PhD degree in History, in 1991 degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences (Full Doctor). Since 1975 to present he worked in the Sokhumi State University (since 1993 this University is based in Tbilisi). Since 2008 he is a Head of the Scientific Work Coordination Service of the University, since 2007 Deputy Chairman of the Main Editorial Board of the "Proceedings of the Sokhumi State University". Papaskiri is an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal "Saistorio Dziebani" ("Historical Investigations") also (since 1998).

Papaskiri is a distinguished scientist in the fields of history of Georgia of the X-XIII centuries, history of Georgian Diplomacy and history of Abkhazia. He is author of about 160 scientific-research publikations, among them 11 monographs. He is a member of the Board of the Georgian Takaishvili Society of History and Ethnology and a Chairman of the Abkhazian Department of this Society.

In 1998 he received a State Prize of Giorgi Shervashidze, in 2002 the Medal of Honour.
